#8 Emory Opens NCAA Play with 6-1 Win over Piedmont

Emory University junior Emily Feldman recorded the first postseason 'hat trick' in the program's history, and junior Charlotte Butker added two goals and an assist, as the eighth-ranked Eagles rolled to a 6-1 home win over Piedmont College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships on Saturday.

The Eagles extended their season-long winning streak to eight games with the victory, and have now won 13 of their last 14 games.  Emory improved to 15-3-1 overall, while Piedmont's season came to a close with a 17-3-2 record.

Emory was dominant in the first 45 minutes of action, ending the half with a 6-0 lead over the visitors.  Junior Meredith Doherty started the scoring for the Eagles in the fifth minute, scoring her second goal of the season off an assist from Butker.  Doherty would return the favor just under four minutes later, assisting on a ninth minute goal from Butker to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead, with what would eventually prove to be the game-winning goal.

In the 11th minute, Butker struck again for Emory scoring her second goal of the game and fifth of the season off assists from seniors Kelly Costopoulos and Veronica Romero

From there, Feldman went to work for the Eagles, coming off the bench to score three unanswered goals to end the first half.  She struck in each of the 27th, 30th and 42nd minutes to build a 6-0 lead for the Eagles heading into the break.

Feldman has now scored five goals and assisted on two others, despite appearing in just five games this season for the Eagles.  In addition, her seven career NCAA Tournament goals are the most in the program's history.

Piedmont would break through for a goal early in the second half, as senior Laura Goodwin notched her 17th goal of the season in the 55th minute off an assist from senior Sarah Hill.  However, Emory would play the possession game the remainder of the half to hold on for the 6-1 victory.

The six goals were the most in a single NCAA Tournament game in the history of Emory Women's Soccer, and the five-goal margin of victory was also a program record.  Emory finished the game with a 28-5 margin in shots, and an 11-1 edge in shots on goal.

Goalkeeper Liz Arnold earned the win for Emory without making a save, playing a scoreless first half before giving way to Gabrielle Pelura for the second half of action.  Piedmont's Marjorie Hammond allowed each of the six goals in the first half, making four saves, while Michaela Gardner played a scoreless second half with one save.

The Eagles continue tournament play on Sunday at 1:30 PM, playing host to the winner of the first-round match between Centre College and 11th-ranked Lynchburg College at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.
