#7 Eagles Battle Top-Ranked Trinity to 1-1 Tie

The Emory University Women's Soccer Team, ranked seventh in Division III, earned a hard-fought 1-1 double-overtime tie against Trinity University (Texas), the top-ranked squad in the Nation, at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Friday night.

The game was a tight-played defensive battle throughout, with scoring opportunities few-and-far between for both teams.  The Eagles finished with a slight edge over the Tigers in shots, 8-7, and both squads accumulated three shots on goal in the game.

The Eagles took the early advantage in the game, when senior Charlotte Butker sent a ball up field that senior Emily Feldman raced to beat Trinity keeper Devan Osegueda to at the edge of the 18-yard box in the 18th minute of play.  Feldman took position and drove past the goalkeeper before placing a shot into the net for her first goal of the season.

It was the 21st goal of Feldman's career, tying her for the ninth-most in school history with three other former Eagles.  Her 54 career points are tied for the 14th-most in the program's history with former Eagle Katie Coburn (1998-2001).  The assist was the first of the season for Butker and 23rd of her career, giving her sole possession of sixth-place in the program's record book.

The score remained 1-0 until the 58th minute, when Trinity's Kelsey Falcone headed in a cross by Kimberly Polasek for her second goal of the season, equalizing the score at 1-1.

Emory's best chance the remained of the game came of a foul on Trinity in the 74th minute, when the keeper picked up the ball inside the box after it was kicked to her by a teammate, resulting in a free kick.  Senior Jennifer Grant attempted the resulting shot, but it was blocked by the Tigers' defense.

Trinity had its best chance to notch the game winner in the 100th minute, when Falcone beat a defender to setup a one-on-one with Emory keeper Liz Arnold.  Falcone took a point-blank shot, but Arnold was able to make the save and secure possession to end the threat.  Arnold made a pair of saves in the tie.

With the tie, Emory's record moved to 1-0-2, while Trinity now stands at 1-0-1.

The Eagles will be back in action next Friday, September 12th at 7:00 PM, playing host to Birmingham-Southern College at the Woodruff P.E. Center.
