Rodriguez Scores a Pair in Emory’s 3-1 Win over Capital

Emory University senior Karina Rodriguez scored her first two goals of the 2014 season, highlighting a 34-shot attack from the sixth-ranked Eagles and lifting the team to a 3-1 win over Capital University at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.

The victory was the third straight for the Eagles, who improved to 4-0-2 overall for the season.  Capital, which reached the semifinals of the NCAA Championships in 2013 and began the week ranked sixth in the Great Lakes Region, dropped to 5-3-0 with the loss.

Rodriguez put the Eagles out in front in the 12th minute, scoring her first goal of the season.  Senior Kaelyn Lucas went on a long run up the near sideline, passing forward to Rodriguez, who cut into the box and launched a hard shot off the hands of the Capital goalkeeper, Alexis Brand, and into the net for the goal.  Lucas was credited with her first assist of the campaign on the goal.

Minutes later, the game was forced into a delay, after the center referee, Jeff Bouchard, suffered an injury.  The match continued approximately 20 minutes later with a two-referee system in use.

Emory tacked on another goal in the 40th minute, when senior Jennifer Grant took a long shot off a pass from freshman Kaitlyn Dorka, sending the ball past the keeper for her second goal of the season.  Dorka picked up her second assist of the year on the play as well.

The goal would prove to be the game winner, the first of the year for Grant.

Capital would halve the Eagles lead early in the second half, when a clearance attempt by Emory was intercepted by Capital's Chloe Brown, who volleyed a shot into the goal for her second score of the year, making it a 2-1 game after 49 minutes of action.

The Eagles pushed their lead back up to a pair of goals in the 72nd minute, when Rodriguez struck for her second goal of the day.  This time, freshman Anna Gurney fed a pass to Rodriguez inside the box to set up a one-on-one with the keeper, which Rodriguez was able to finish to give Emory a 3-1 lead.

Emory would maintain the advantage for the rest of the game to secure the victory, finishing the contest with a 34-6 edge in total shots, and a 17-3 advantage in shots on goal.  The Eagles outshot Capital 22-2 in the second half of action.

Junior Liz Arnold played the entire game in goal, making a pair of saves to improve to 4-0-2 on the season.

Emory will return to action next weekend, beginning a three-game road swing with a trip to Kentucky.  The Eagles will face Transylvania on Saturday, September 27th and Centre on Sunday, September 28th, with both contests slated for 1:00 PM starts.
