Feldman’s ‘Golden Goal’ Gives Emory Double-OT Win over Centre

Feldman’s ‘Golden Goal’ Gives Emory Double-OT Win over Centre

With just 55 seconds left in the second overtime period, Emory University senior Emily Feldman broke a scoreless tie with the second 'golden goal' of her collegiate career, giving the fifth-ranked Eagles a 1-0 victory over Centre College in Danville, Kentucky on Sunday afternoon.

Feldman's 110th minute strike came off a pass from senior co-captain Meredith Doherty inside the box.  Feldman then launched a tight-angled shot from the near side past the keeper for her third score of the season, tying her for the team lead.  It was her first game-winning score of the campaign.

Doherty, who was fresh into the game after re-entering in the 108th minute, earned the assist on the play, her first of the season.

It gave Emory its first overtime win since September 2nd, 2013, when the Eagles bested the University of Massachusetts – Boston in overtime on the road on a Veronica Romero game winner.

The victory brought Emory's winning streak to five games, as the Eagles improved to 6-0-2 overall, and remained one of the eight undefeated teams left in Division III.  Centre dropped to 6-2-1 overall with the loss.

Sunday's game pitted two of the top-ranked defenses in Division III women's soccer against each other.  After a tight-played first half, the Eagles came out as the aggressor early in the second frame, taking three shots in the first five minutes of the half after recorded four during the first 45 minutes of play.  The Eagles would go on to take the first eight shots of the second half, before Centre registered its first of the period in the 80th minute.

Emory had one of its better opportunities of regulation in the 82nd minute, when Feldman went on a long run, before taking a shot that Centre keeper Olivia Alford tipped over the crossbar.  The Eagles ended up taking back-to-back corner kicks immediately following the play, but could not convert on either.

Emory outshot Centre 9-2 in the second half, ending regulation with a 13-7 edge in total shots.

After a relatively uneventful first overtime, it took a tremendous effort from Emory's junior goalkeeper Liz Arnold took keep the contest alive, prior to Feldman's game winner.  Centre began to gain possession more consistently in the middle of the period, resulting in a pair of shots on target in short succession in the 105th minute.  Arnold was able to dive and deflect both, preserving the shutout and preventing an overtime loss.

Arnold finished the game with a season-high seven saves, matching her career-best mark, previously set during last year's NCAA Tournament game against Wheaton College (Ill.).  She played all 109 minutes, lowering her goals-against average to 0.36 for the season, and raising her save percentage to .880.  Arnold picked up her fourth individual shutout of the season, and the team's fifth.

Emory finished with a 16-14 edge in total shots and a 9-7 edge in shots on goal.  Feldman registered a game-high six shots on Sunday.

The Eagles will now turn their attention towards their conference schedule.  Emory will face an immediate test next weekend, traveling to top-ranked and undefeated Washington University (Mo.) for a 2:30 PM ET matchup on Sunday, October 5th.
