#5 Emory Battles Top-Ranked Wash U. to 1-1 2 OT Draw

For the second-time this season, the Emory University Women's Soccer Team played a top-ranked opponent to a tie, as the sixth-ranked Eagles battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw against the Washington University (Mo.) Bears on Sunday afternoon in St.  Louis, Missouri.

Both squads remained undefeated for the season, with the Eagles' record moving to 6-0-3, while the Bears now stand at 9-0-2.  The teams moved into a tie for fourth-place in the conference, after the first weekend of University Athletic Association (UAA) competition.

Despite the defense prowess of both teams, the early part of the contest featured an offensive outburst, accounting for all of the scoring in the game.  The Bears took the early lead in the game on Katie Chandler's sixth goal of the campaign, coming in the 14th minute.  The Bears went on the attack on the play, going on a two-on-one breakaway down the field, before Lillie Toaspern passed off to an open Chandler, who converted her shot for the goal.

However, the Eagles responded just 35 seconds later, when senior Charlotte Butker sent a long cross towards the near post that was headed in for the equalizer by senior Emily Feldman, her team-leading fourth goal of the season.  The goal was just the second scored against the Washington this season.

With the assist on the play, Butker moved into a tie for second in school history with Caroline Hoit (1997-00) with 25 career assists.  She is now six assists shy of the program record of 31, currently held by Sylvia Ghani (1994-97).  Butker is tied for the team lead with three assists this season.

Emory had a chance to take the lead in the 25th minute, when senior Karina Rodriguez maneuvered with the ball between defenders to come open inside the box and setting up a one-on-one with the keeper.  However, Washington goalkeeper Lizzy Crist was able to make the save, keeping the game knotted at a goal apiece.

The Eagles would finish the first half with a slight edge in shots, 9-7, although the Bears placed five of their shots on target during the frame, compared to four for Emory.

Feldman created a pair of opportunities in short succession in the second half, going on a pair of breakaways in the 58th and 59th minutes, but Crist made saves on both of Feldman's shots.

Emory goalkeeper Liz Arnold made four more saves of her own in the second half, including one on a shot from Toaspern in the 87th minute that required a diving effort, and another on a short-range free kick from Tessa Klumpp just under two minutes later.  The two teams finished regulation dead-even, with 17 shots and nine shots on goal apiece.

Possession was back-and-forth in the first overtime, with the Bears registering the only two shots of the period, both of which were off target.  The story would be the same in the second overtime, with Washington again registering the only two shots of the stanza, neither of which was on goal.

Arnold finished the game with eight saves for the Emory, setting a new career-high mark.  She has 15 saves with just one goal allowed over her last two games, both of which have been double-overtime affairs.

The tie for Washington ended a 12-match conference winning streak for the Bears, which began after the Eagles tied them during the 2012 campaign.

Emory will have a quick turnaround before their next game, returning to action on Tuesday, October 7th at 5:00 PM, hosting non-conference opponent Covenant College at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.
