#5 Emory Keeps Undefeated Season Intact with 2-0 Win over Covenant

Emory University broke through for a pair of goals in the second half on Tuesday night at the Woodruff Physical Education Center to defeat Covenant College 2-0 in non-conference action.

The win was the sixth in the last seven games for the Eagles, who remained undefeated in 2014 with a 7-0-3 overall record.  The Lady Scots fell to 6-7-1 with the loss.

Emory dominated the first half, outshooting the visiting Lady Scots 25-1, but Covenant was able to pack the box defensively, and fend off the Eagles' attack.  Goalkeeper Lucy Johnson saved all of Emory's nine shots on goal during the frame, to keep the contest scoreless heading into the second half.  Each of the 15 Emory field players that saw action in the first half took at least one shot during the period.

Emory would finally break through to take the lead early in the second half, when senior Karina Rodriguez sent a header into the goal in the 52nd minute for her third score of the year off a cross from junior Jordan Morell.  Morell claimed her third assist of the season on the play, while senior Sarah Kuehl, who started the scoring attempt by sending a ball wide to Morell, picked up her first assist of the season.

Emory added on a second goal in the 68th minute, when sophomore Cristina Ramirez sent a cross into the box that was deflected by freshman Melissa Ardizzone to freshman Kaitlyn Dorka, who placed a shot past the Covenant keeper for her second goal of the campaign.  Ramirez picked up her team-high fourth assist of the year on the goal, while Ardizzone earned her first career assist.

Emory registered a season-high 40 shots, marking the third time this year that the Eagles have broken the 30-shot mark in a game.  26 different players saw action in the game for Emory.

Meanwhile, Emory's defense limited the Lady Scots to just one first half shot in the game, and held them without a shot on goal.  Junior goalkeeper Kristin Temple relieved starter Liz Arnold in the second half, and helped hold the Lady Scots scoreless to earn the win, the first decision of her career.

Johnson finished the game with 14 saves for Covenant.

The Eagles will return to conference play this weekend, when the plays its first home University Athletic Association (UAA) game of the year, hosting the University of Chicago at 1:30 PM on Saturday, October 11th at the Woodruff P.E. Center.
