#5 Emory Women’s Soccer Falls to #14 Chicago, 2-1

Fifth-ranked Emory University fell behind by a pair of goals in the first half to the 14th-ranked University of Chicago, and the Maroons withstood a late surge by the Eagles to hold on to a 2-1 win at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Saturday afternoon.

Chicago took the lead in the 18th minute on an own goal after Emory's defense was unable to clear out a free kick from the six-yard box, and the ball found the back of the net.

The game was delayed in the 37th minute for an hour and ten minutes, due to lighting in the area.  When play resumed, Chicago took immediate advantage, scoring within 30 seconds of the restart on a pass from Julia Ozello into the box that was finished by Mary Bittner for her fourth goal of the season, extending the Maroons' lead to 2-0.

In the second half, Emory would use a Charlotte Butker corner kick to cut Chicago's lead in half.  Butker sent the 69th minute corner into traffic inside the six-yard box, where senior Karina Rodriguez deflected it into the far corner for her fourth goal of the season.

The assist was the fourth of the season for Butker, and put her in sole possession of second place in school history with 26 career assists, and five shy of the program record of 31, held by Sylvia Ghani (1994-97).

Emory would continue to threaten throughout the second half, outshooting Chicago by a total of 10-0 during the frame.  However, the Eagles would be unable to find the equalizer, despite a number of close calls, dropping their first game of the campaign.

Emory fell to 7-1-3 overall for the season, including a 0-1-1 mark in University Athletic Association (UAA) play.  Chicago raised its ledger to 10-2-0, including a 1-1-1 UAA mark.

The Eagles will have a quick turnaround, traveling to Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama on Monday, October 13th for an 8:00 PM ET contest against the Panthers, a make-up of a game that was rained-out earlier in the year.
