#9 Eagles Tie #23 NYU in UAA Action

#9 Eagles Tie #23 NYU in UAA Action

After playing scoreless soccer for the first 80 minutes, Emory University and New York University each scored a goal in the final 10 minutes of regulation on Friday in New York, as the ninth-ranked Eagles and the 23rd-ranked Violets played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie.

With the tie, the Eagles now stand at 7-1-4 this season, including a 0-1-2 record in University Athletic Association (UAA) play.  The Violets remained atop the conference standings with a 2-0-1 mark, and hold a 9-3-1 overall record in 2014.  The rest of the UAA will be in action later on Friday.

Emory's defense held strong in the first half, holding the Violets to just one off-target shot during the period.  Meanwhile, Emory was able to take eight shots during the frame, including four on goal, but could not find the back of the net, as the game remained scoreless heading into the second half.

In the second half, junior goalkeeper Liz Arnold made a key save for the Eagles, stopping a Melissa Menta shot in the 67th minute to keep the contest scoreless.

Emory would break the scoreless tie in the 81st minute, when a NYU player fouled an Eagle in the center of the field, and just outside the 18-yard box.  Senior Emily Feldman took the resulting free kick, driving the shot off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net for her team-leading fifth goal of the campaign.

It was the 25th goal of Feldman's career, putting her into a tie with former Eagle Kelly Costopoulos (2010-13) for eighth-place in the program's history.

However, the Eagles' lead would be short-lived.  Emory struggled to clear a ball out of the defensive zone in the 86th minute, and Menta was able to collect it for the Violets, firing a shot into the upper right corner for the equalizer, her fourth goal of the year.

Each team took three shots during the two overtime periods, with the Eagles holding a 2-1 edge in shots on goal, but neither squad was able to notch the game-winning score, as the game ended in a tie.

Arnold played all 110 minutes, finishing the game with three saves for the Eagles, while Cassie Steinberg made six saves for the Violets.

The Eagles will continue their weekend conference road trip on Sunday, October 19th at 1:30 PM against Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.
