21st-Ranked Emory Wins 3-0 over Case on ‘Senior Day’

21st-Ranked Emory Wins 3-0 over Case on ‘Senior Day’

Emory University celebrated 'Senior Day' with an offensive outburst on Sunday afternoon, as the 21st-ranked Eagles defeated Case Western Reserve University 3-0 in the team's final home game of the 2014 campaign.

Emory sophomore Cristina Ramirez finished the game with a pair of goals, and senior Emily Feldman added a goal and an assist of her own.  Meanwhile, the Eagles defense held its conference opponent to just five shots, with only two on goal, en route to the team's fourth-straight shutout and 10th overall this season.

The win was the first University Athletic Association (UAA) win of the year for the Eagles, who improved to 1-1-4 in conference action and to 10-1-6 overall.  Case dropped to 8-6-3 on the year, including a 1-4-1 UAA mark.

Feldman put the Eagles on the board in the 15th minute, launching a shot from the outskirts of the 18-yard box that banged off the inside of the far post and into the net for the score.  It was Feldman's team-leading sixth goal of the season, while senior Karina Rodriguez, who supplied the pass that started Feldman's break downfield, earned her second assist of the campaign.

Emory extended its lead to 2-0 at the end of the first half, when Feldman sent a cross from the far side of the field to the middle, where Ramirez ran up to send a shot into the upper right corner of the net with just 28.6 seconds remaining in the frame.  It was the fourth goal of the campaign for Ramirez, while Feldman picked up her second assist of the year on the play.

Meanwhile, the Eagles defense was superb in the first frame, holding the Spartans without a shot during the period, while Emory amassed 12 first half shots, including six on goal.

Emory took the first shot of the second half, before Case was able to take its first chance at the goal, a long-range shot in the 55th minute by Christine Briendel that was saved by Liz Arnold

Arnold would make another key save late, when a penalty kick was awarded to Case Western Reserve.  Jessica Sabers took the kick for the Spartans, but Arnold dove to deflect the ball for the save, keeping her clean sheet intact.

The Eagles added another goal late, with Ramirez striking for her second of the game, heading in a lob from senior Kaelyn Lucas with 15 seconds left in regulation to make the score 3-0.  It was the first career two-goal game for Ramirez, who now has a team-best 16 points on five goals and six assists this season.  Lucas picked up her first assist of the year on the play.

The three-goal outburst for Emory was particularly impressive against a Case defense that ranked among the best in Division III entering the game, allowing just nine goals to date prior to Sunday's match.  The Eagles took 22 shots in the game, including nine off the foot of Feldman.

Arnold played all 90 minutes in goal, making two saves and earning her sixth individual shutout of the year.  She improved to 8-1-6 with a 0.49 goals-against average and a .852 save percentage.

Prior to the game, the Eagles honored the eight graduating members of their senior class - Charlotte Butker, Meredith Doherty, Feldman, Jennifer Grant, Sarah Kuehl, Lucas, Rodriguez and Claudia Rowe - who were each playing in their final regular season home match.  Together, the eight combined for a 58-8-16 record over the last four years.

The Eagles will conclude their regular season on Saturday, November 8th at Carnegie Mellon University, with the game time set for 2:30 PM.  Emory will then await the selection of the field for the 2014 NCAA Women's Soccer Championships, set to be released via a webcasted selection show on NCAA.com at 1:00 PM on Monday, November 10th.
