#24 Emory Upsets #4 Carnegie Mellon in Regular Season Finale

Emory University senior Emily Feldman broke a scoreless tie with a 70th minute goal, and the defense recorded its fifth-straight clean sheet, as the 24th-ranked Eagles upset fourth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University 1-0 in their regular season finale in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon.

The win was the second-straight for the Eagles, who wrapped up their regular season campaign with an overall record of 11-1-6, including a 2-1-4 mark in University Athletic Association (UAA) contests.  Carnegie, which clinched the UAA Title earlier in the day when Chicago lost to Washington, dropped to 14-2-0 on the campaign and to 5-2-0 in the conference.

Emory finished the season tied with Washington for fourth-place in the conference, behind Carnegie, Chicago (4-2-1) and New York University (3-2-2).  However, the Eagles ended the regular season campaign as the only UAA team with just one loss, both overall and in UAA action, in 2014.

On Saturday, Emory had an opportunity to score in the 24th minute, when Feldman went box-to-box on a breakaway down the field, sending a leading pass to senior Karina Rodriguez in the middle of the field.  Rodriguez look a shot on goal, but Carnegie Mellon keeper Katie Liston made a diving stop to prevent the score.

Feldman had a chance of her own in the 30th minute when a well-placed through ball from senior Charlotte Butker setup a one-on-one with the Carnegie keeper, but once again Liston was able to pounce on the ball for the save.  Both teams finished the first half with three shots on goal, with the Tartans holding a slight edge, 5-3, in total shots.

Early in the second half, junior goalkeeper Liz Arnold made a key save for Emory, tipping a high-arching shot from Tori Iatarola over the crossbar in the 47th-minute to prevent the score, her fourth save of the game to that point.

The Eagles would break the tie in the 70th minute, when Feldman took possession of the ball in the attacking third, driving laterally to the middle of the field before turning around her defender to gain space, and sending a low shot to the inside of the far post for the goal.  It was the team-leading seventh goal of the season for Feldman and her third game-winning strike.

With one game left on Saturday's conference slate, Feldman ended the season second among all UAA players with four goals and nine points in conference games.  In addition, her two game-winning scores were tied for the most among conference players in 2014 UAA games.  She also moved into sole possession of seventh place in school history with 27 career goals.

Emory's defense would hold on to complete the shutout, the team's 11th of the year.  Arnold finished the game with four saves for her seventh individual shutout of the year, while lowering her goals-against average to 0.46 and raising her save percentage to .862.

Arnold also picked up her 24th career win, tying her with Kaele Leonard (2009-12) for the fifth-most in school history, and her 13th career shutout, moving her into third in the program's record book.

The Eagles will now await the selection of the 2014 NCAA Division III Championship field, set to be announced on Monday, November 10th at 1:00 PM, via a live selection show on NCAA.org.  Emory will be hoping to receive one of the 20 at large pool 'C' bids, awarded to teams that did not receive their conference's automatic bid.  Fans can watch the live selection show at http://www.ncaa.com/liveschedule/2014/11/10.
