Women's Soccer Blanks Sewanee 1-0 in Season Opener

Women's Soccer Blanks Sewanee 1-0 in Season Opener

The Emory women's soccer team began the 2015 season in winning fashion on Tuesday night, knocking off regional foe Sewanee 1-0.

Junior Cristina Ramirez provided the lone tally in the game, converting on a penalty kick almost 11 minutes into the contest. Ramirez was taken down in the box by a Tiger defender to set up the PK.

Eight Emory players had a shot on goal in the game with Ramirez, Sophia Dillon and Melinda Altamore leading the way with two shots a piece. Nikki Batt and Melissa Ardizzone each added a shot on goal for Emory.

The Eagles' defense picked up right where it left off from a year ago, allowing just one shot on goal throughout the entire 90 minutes and just three shots total. Emory held Sewanee without a shot of any kind until just over eight minutes into the second half. Senior goalkeeper Liz Arnold picked up her 14th career shutout, blocking the lone shot that came her way.

With the victory, Emory now runs its record to 22-4-4 all-time in season openers including being unbeaten in its last six (5-0-1). The Eagles also run their win-loss mark to 23-2-2 all-time in the series with the Tigers. Emory has posted shutouts in the last four meetings between the schools.

The Eagles will be back in action this weekend as the team takes part in the Bob Baptista Invitational at Wheaton College in Illinois. Emory will square off against #17 Puget Sound on Friday at 12:30pm followed by a matchup with #10 William Smith on Saturday at 12:30pm.
