#17 Puget Sound Edges Emory Women's Soccer 1-0 in Defensive Battle

The Emory University women's soccer team fell to 17th-ranked University of Puget Sound by the score of 1-0 on Friday afternoon in the first game of the Bob Baptista Invitational hosted by Wheaton College in Illinois.

The game was a defensive battle as both teams combined for 14 shots with just of those six on goal. The Eagles held an 8-6 edge in total shots and had a 4-2 advantage over Puget Sound in shots on goal.

Amalia Acorda-Fey provided the Loggers with the early advantage, scoring from 10 feet in front of the net in the 22nd minute of the contest. That was the last scoring opportunity Emory would allow UPS, as the Eagles defense did not allow the opponents another shot on target for the remaining 68 minutes of the contest.

Emory had several chances in the waning minutes to try and knot the game at one goal apiece as Brooke Edwards had her header off an Ally Peterson corner kick sail high with five minutes to go. Two minutes later, Cristina Ramirez had a shot blocked and Sophia Dillon put the rebound back on goal but was denied by Puget Sound goalkeeper Lauren Thomas.

The Eagles will look to bounce back on Saturday afternoon as they face another top 20 team in 10th-ranked William Smith College in the second game of the Bob Baptista Invitational. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 12:30pm.
