2021 Women's Soccer Season Recap

2021 Women's Soccer Season Recap

Returning to the field for the first time in nearly two years following the pandemic, the Emory University women's soccer team picked up where it left off as it posted its fourth straight double-digit win campaign and earned a berth to the NCAA postseason for the third consecutive season.

Going up against the 22nd toughest schedule in Division III, the Eagles racked up 12 wins for the third straight year, finishing the season with a 12-5-3 record to mark the program's 32nd straight winning season.

After recording the best offensive season in nearly a decade during the 2019 season, the Eagles were even better in 2021, ranking 47th in the country in scoring offense at 2.65 goals per game as well as 14th in shots per game (22.35) and 31st in shots on goal (10.5). Emory was just as impressive on defense, allowing 11 goals across the 20-game slate to go along with 12 shutouts and were 27th in Division III in goals-against average (.527).

Emory began the season in impressive fashion, going unbeaten in its first eight games with a 7-0-1 record while outscoring opponents 36-2 and turning in six straight shutouts. During the streak, the Eagles picked up key non-conference wins against No. 18 Ohio Northern and Washington & Lee while also tying the program record of most goals in a single game with their 13-0 romp at Birmingham-Southern.

The Eagles proceeded to go 1-3 over its next four contests before rebounding with three straight wins including conference wins over top-15 foes Case Western Reserve and Carnegie Mellon. Emory ended the year with a 0-1-2 mark in its final three games, leading to an at-large berth to the NCAA tournament.

The Eagles were sent on the road for the opening weekend, travelling to Centre College in Danville, KY to battle Wittenberg in the first round. The Eagles put forth a dominating display, outshooting the Tigers 42-2 en route to the 4-0 win.

In the second round Emory was matched up against the host Colonels, representing the second time the two teams had met during the season. Once again, 90 minutes was not enough to decide a winner as the match went to overtime with the Colonels notching the game-winner in the closing seconds of the first overtime period.

Senior Lily Dresner, one of the team leaders and defensive anchors, was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-America Third Team following her stellar senior season. Dresner was one of the four Eagles to garner All-Region acclaim at the end of the year, the most by an Emory team since 2011. Dresner was tabbed to the All-Region First Team while classmate Samantha Hilsee and junior Kylie Hall earned Second Team acclaim and sophomore Olivia McBerry was named to the Third Team.

All four players were honored by the UAA at season's end along with junior Aubrey Blanchard, with Dreser and McBerry leading the charge with Second Team selections.

McBerry was a force to be reckon with on the offensive end as she was one of six Eagles with double-digit points and topping the squad with eight goals. Hall had a team-leading eight assists with Blanchard and Hilsee each finding the back of the net six times.

In addition to the team's athletic achievements, seniors Lauren Mahoney and Arielle Williamson were chosen as members of the prestigious Emory 100 Senior Honorary while Hilsee made her first appearance on the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team.
