Women's Soccer's Winning Streak Reaches Double Digits; Tops Piedmont 1-0

The No. 16 ranked Emory University women's soccer team's winning streak reached double digits Thursday night, defeating in-state foe Piedmont University on a chilly night in Demorest, Georgia.

Another dominating performance put forth by the Eagles helped the team notch its 10th win in a row as Emory topped Piedmont 1-0 in non-conference action. The Eagles now stand 11-2 overall while the Lions slipped to 8-5-2. This is only the second time in program history the Eagles have had a winning streak reach double figures and now is two wins shy of tying the 1989 team for longest winning streak in team history.

Emory held possession for most of the contest, ending the night with a 42-3 edge in total shots and had a 16-3 lead in shots on goal. It marked the second time the Eagles had 40 or more shots in a game this season, three shy of the season-high of 45 recorded against Oglethorpe on October 4.

The Eagles averaged at least one shot per every two minutes in the first half, outshooting the Lions 24-2 but failed to reach the scoreboard as the score was 0-0 at the halftime break. Freshman Avery Thompson had the team's best scoring threat of the half as her chance drilled the crossbar in the 39th minute.

In the beginning stages of the second half, the Eagles had several more opportunities but could not break through. The next best scoring threat came in the 60th minute as graduate student Haley Barge found an unmarked Natalie Klar in the center of the box but Klar's shot off the pass missed wide right. Junior Mia Han had another scoring opportunity for the Eagles in the 75th minute with a 1-on-1 chance from eight yards out but was turned away by the Lions' keeper.

Senior Emma Miller came up clutch as she denied Piedmont's lone scoring threat of the evening with a remarkable diving save to keep the game scoreless in the 65th minute. Miller finished with three saves as she picked up her fifth shutout of the year.

It was not until Emory's 37th shot of the night that the team found the scoring column as freshman Claudia Schmidt registered her first career goal with the eventual game-winner in the 77th minute. Graduate student Mara Rodriguez picked up the assist on the score.

The Eagles are scheduled to take on another in-state foe Monday night against Covenant College prior to returning to UAA action the following weekend against top-10 programs in No. 4 Case Western Reserve and No. 9 Carnegie Mellon on Oct. 28 and 30.
