The Emory University women's soccer team was handed its first defeat of the 2023 season Sunday afternoon, falling at home to the University of Hartford by a 3-1 margin.
Despite a 29-9 margin in shots, it was the Hawks that earned the win to stay unbeaten at 3-0 while the Eagles dropped to 2-1.
Hartford became the first team to score on the Eagles backline this year, with Victoria Jedrychowski firing a top shelf strike from the semi-circle in the game's ninth minute.
The score remained 1-0 until the second half when the Hawks benefited from a defensive miscue by Emory as errant back pass found its way to the back of the net for an own goal at 56:49. Six minutes later, Hartford tacked on another goal when Leah Barbieri's long rang shot hit the far post to make it 3-0 visitors.
The Eagles avoided the shutout in the 84th minute as senior Emma Cornejo converted a penalty kick to provide the final margin.
Emory looks to rebound when it hosts Illinois Wesleyan University on Friday night, September 15th, at the WoodPEC. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 PM in Atlanta.
