Women's Soccer Stifles Covenant, 4-0

Women's Soccer Stifles Covenant, 4-0

The No. 25 ranked Emory University women's soccer team returned to the win column Wednesday night, defeating in-state foe Covenant College by a 4-0 score in front of the home WoodPEC crowd in Atlanta.

Four different Eagles notched goals in the win as Emory recorded its fifth win of the season. As has been the case with each win this year, the Eagles continued to showcase a favorable margin in the possession battle outshooting the Scots by a 28-1 margin, including 17-1 with shots on goal.

Senior Grace Reyer and sophomore Avery Thompson provided the scoring in the first half with freshmen Kaitlyn Nimmer and Madison Teng registering tallies across the final 45 minutes of play. Wednesday marked the third time in 2023 that the Eagles saw four different goal scorers in a game.

Reyer opened the scoring in the 15th minute, fighting the ball away from a Covenant defender following a blocked Sylvie Prepetit shot and was able to fire a shot underneath the diving Scot keeper. Thompson doubled the Emory lead nine minutes later, one-timing a Katie Hungness pass after she had juked around a defender on the end line. Both goals for Reyer and Thompson represented the third of the season for each Eagle.

Nimmer followed suit in the 58th minute as she also netted her third goal of the season. Senior Kylie Hall sent a long through ball to Nimmer who in turn showed patience as she settled the pass and rifled a shot over the Covenant keeper's left shoulder.

Teng closed out the evening with her first-career goal in the game's 88th minute. Graduate student Claire Wilkinson used her speed to get around a defender and found Teng in the middle of the 18 who one-timed it in off her left boot.

After the brief return to non-conference play, the Eagles (5-2-2) will be back to UAA competition this weekend as Emory travels to Cleveland to battle the No. 6 ranked Case Western Reserve Spartans (9-0-1) on Saturday at 11:00 AM.
