Athletes of the Week

(Feb. 20) Freshman Sarah Axtell turned in two NCAA q-times this past weekend at the Emory Invitational. Axtell qualified in the 100 and 200 backstrokes. Her time in the 100 backstroke was 59.45, while a 2:07.92 in the 200 backstroke.


(Feb. 13) Senior Samantha White was named the 2005-06 University Athletic Association Female Swimmer of the Year.  She has turned in a solid final campaign as an Eagle with "A" cuts in the 500 yard freestyle and the 1650 freestyle.  She also has "B" cuts in the 200 freestyle and 400 individual medley.  At the UAA Championships this past weekend in Atlanta, White won the 200 yard freestyle, 300 yard freestyle, as well as the 1650 freestyle.  She was also on the winning 800 yard freestyle relay team that set a new UAA mark at 7:39.48.


(Feb. 13) Freshman Tess Pasternak was named the University Athletic Association Rookie of the Year.  Pasternak made an immediate impact on the Division III defending national champions.  She has qualified for the NCAA championships in four different events this season.  She has "A" cuts for the 100 and 200 backstroke, while also turning in "B" cuts for the 200 and 400 medley relays.    At the UAA Championships this past weekend, Pasternak claimed first in the 200 yard backstroke at 2:06.52.


(Jan. 30) Senior Samantha White recorded two second-place finishes this past weekend against Georgia Tech of Division I.  She finished second in the 1000 yard freestyle in a time of 10:17.61, while also finishing second in the 500 yard freestyle, hitting the wall at 1:26.44.


(Jan. 23) Junior Ali Smith turned in a solid performance this past weekend for the Emory women's swimming and diving team.  She won the women's 400 yard individual medley in a time of 4:34.00.  This season she holds the nation's second fastest time for the individual medley at 4:31.19.


(Dec.5) Senior Sam White competed at the Miami Invitational over the weekend highlighted by a second-place finish in the 500 yard freestyle.  She touched the wall in a time of 4:59.33.  White also finished in the top five in the 1650 yard freestyle.  She concluded the race in fifth-place with a time of 17:17.86.


(Nov. 7) Freshman Tess Pasternak won three individual events and two relays at the Carnegie Mellon Invitational.  She won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.60.  In the 100-yard backstroke, she placed first in a time of 58.43.  Both of these times make the NCAA A cut for the national championships.  She also finished first in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:12.44   Pasternak swam legs on the 400-yard medley relay team that won the event in 4:01.56 and the winning 200-yard medley relay team that made the NCAA B cut with a time of 1:49.36.


(Oct. 31) Senior Holly Hinz won three events for the Eagles in a dual meet against the University of North Carolina-Wilimington.  She placed first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.21.  Hinz won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:05.18.  She is a two-time All American and former national champion in this event.  Hinz also swam a leg on the 400-yard freestyle relay team that won the event with a time of 3:38.32. 


(Oct.24) Freshman Tess Pasternak made two NCAA B cuts over the weekend in a meet against Division I schools Georgia Southern and New Orleans. In the 400 IM she finished at 4:39.13, while in the 100 BK she clocked in at 58.64. She also led off the winning 200 MR with a 28.18 BK split.
