2007-08 Women's Swimming & Diving Season Recap

The 2007-08 campaign marked another successful season for the Emory Women's Swimming and Diving team, as the Eagles finished fourth at the 2008 NCAA Division III Championships.  It was the eighth-straight top-four finish for the Emory University women's squad.

The future looks bright for the Eagles, who were paced at the National Championship meet by sophomore Ruth Westby and freshman Liz Horvat.  Westby became Emory's first Women's National Champion since the 2006 season, winning the 50-yard freestyle in a school-record time of 23.40 seconds.  Westby also earned all-America certificates in five other events, including individual certificates in the 100- and 200-yard freestyles.  Meanwhile, competing in her first collegiate National Championship, Horvat earned individual all-America honors in three events - the 500-yard freestyle, the 1,650-yard freestyle and the 400-yard individual medley.  All together, 10 Emory swimmers earned a total of 25 all-America certificates.

Emory also came away from the season with its 10th-straight University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship, scoring a conference-record 1,951 points.  Westby, who was later named the UAA's Swimmer of the Year, became the first swimmer to win each of the three freestyle sprint events at the conference meet, finishing first in the 50-, 100-, and 200-yard freestyles.  Horvat, who became the second-straight Eagle to earn Rookie of the Year honors, claimed the top-spot in the 500-, and 1650-yard freestyles, and the 400-yard individual medley.  Lillian Ciardelli, Morgan Klinzing and Tess Pasternak each came away with three UAA Championships.

The Eagles finished their dual-meet schedule with an 8-3 record, including wins over Division I's Davidson College (N.C.) and Vanderbilt University (Tenn.).  Emory was a perfect 6-0 against non-Division I teams during the season.
