Emory Swimming & Diving Begins 2010 with a Sweep over Tampa

The Emory University swimming and diving teams did not miss a beat following their one-month hiatus, as the Eagles swept the NCAA Division II University of Tampa on the road on Monday.

The top-ranked Emory women came away with a 161.5 - 92.5 win over the fourth-ranked Tampa Spartans to improve to 3-2 in dual meets this season.  The fourth-ranked Emory men defeated eighth-ranked Tampa 145-117, to raise their record to 2-2.

Four Emory women recorded NCAA ‘B' cut times during the meet.  Junior April Whitley recorded a mark of 1:07.00 in the 100-yard breaststroke, freshman Ann Wolber finished the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 51.98, junior Liz Horvat set a time of 5:08.24 in the 500-yard freestyle, and junior Kristin Tadano recorded a time of 2:07.52 in the 200-yard individual medley.  All four finished first in their respective events.

The Emory women won each of the 14 events in the meet.  Horvat (500 free and 200 fly), Lillian Ciardelli (100 fly and 50 free) and Natty Chalermpalanupap (1000 free and 200 back) each won two individual events, while Ruth Westby (200 free), Whitley Taylor (100 back) and Katie Mroz (200 breast) all won individual events as well.  In addition, Emory's 200-medley relay team (Jacqueline Schneider, Jennifer Aronoff, Ciardelli and Claire Pavlak) and 200-freestyle relay team (Westby, Ciardelli, Wolber and Pavlak) each finished first as well.

On the men's side, the Eagles claimed first-place finishes in seven of the 14 events, including a pair of first place finishes each for senior John Petroff and junior Mark Bernstein.  Petroff claimed victory in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly, while Bernstein finished in the top spot in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle.

Emory's other first-place finishes came from senior Kevin Yamada in the 100-yard breaststroke, freshman Peter O'Brien in the 200-yard breaststroke, and sophomore Paul Weinstein in the 1000-yard freestyle.

Next up for Emory will be a dual meet against the Division I College of Charleston at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.  The meet is slated for an 11:00 AM start on Saturday, January 16th.
