Eagles Claim Victories over Division II Tampa in Return from Winter Break

The Emory University swimming team earned wins at the NCAA Division II University of Tampa in its first meet following winter break, as the men defeated the Spartans 170-92, while the women claimed a 177-83 victory.

With the wins, the top-ranked Emory women improved to 2-3 in dual meets this season, while the third-ranked Emory men raised their record to 1-3.  The Tampa women, ranked seventh in Division II, dropped to 5-2 on the campaign, while the ninth-ranked Tampa men fell to 4-3.

Emory swimmers placed first in19 of the 24 individual events and three of the four relays, with both the men's and women's squad claiming 11 first-place finishes each.

Emory senior Paul Weinstein and sophomore Jake Stephens each claimed a pair of first-place finishes, with Weinstein winning the 500-yard freestyle (4:47.09) and the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:57.22), and Stephens claiming the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle (48.47 seconds) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.12).  Other first-place finishes for the Emory men came from senior Jared Dubnow in the 100-yard backstroke (54.26 seconds), junior Miller Douglas in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.01), junior Justin Beegle in the 100-yard breaststroke (59.43 seconds), freshman Colin Heil in the 200-yard backstroke (1:57.62), and junior Peter O'Brien in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:09.51).

The Eagles also placed first in the men's 200-yard freestyle relay, as sophomore Ross Spock, junior Richard Upton, senior Sean Ransenberg and sophomore Ryan Bass won the event with a time of 1:26.78.

On the women's side, the Eagles claimed victories in both relays, with sophomore Sadie Nennig, senior Jennifer Aronoff, junior Leslie Hackler and junior Anna Dobben winning the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:48.92, while Dobben, junior Ann Wolber, freshman Nancy Larson and junior Claire Pavlak won the 200-yard freestyle relay in a mark of 1:38.17.

Nennig claimed a pair of individual first-place finishes as well, winning the 100-yard backstroke (59.94 seconds) and 200-yard backstroke (2:09.25).  Also winning events for the Emory women were senior Whitley Taylor (1:55.26 in the 200-yard freestyle), Aronoff (1:07.72 in the 100-yard breaststroke), sophomore Ellen Schafer (24.99 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle), freshman McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg (10:36.12 in the 1000-yard freestyle), Wolber (52.86 in the 100-yard freestyle), freshman Megan Beach (2:26.33 in the 200-yard breaststroke) and senior Anne Culpepper (5:06.42 in the 500-yard freestyle).

The Eagles will return to the Woodruff Physical Education Center on Sunday, as Emory will play host to the Division I University of Kentucky on January 15th.  The dual meet is slated for an 11:00 AM start at the Madeleine Jude Brown Aquatic Center.
