The Emory University Swimming and Diving teams wrapped up their dual meet schedule on Saturday afternoon by claiming a pair of victories over the University of the South at the Woodruff Physical Education Center.
The top-ranked Emory women defeated Sewanee 137-84, improving to 4-4 for the campaign, while the Tigers dropped to 2-4. The Emory men, ranked third among NCAA Division III teams, earned a 115-79 win, raising their season ledger to 3-5, while the Sewanee men dropped to 4-2.
The Emory men claimed victories in each of the 11 swimming events on Saturday, including a sweep of both relays. The Eagles' 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Mitchell Cooper, freshman David Tao, sophomore Andrew Wilson and sophomore John Galvin claimed a victory with a time of 1:37.01, while freshman David Funderburk, Cooper, senior Jake Stephens and senior Jack Polisini won the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:14.41.
Nine different Eagles claimed wins in individual events on Saturday as well, including Stephens in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:20.67), Cooper in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.10), sophomore Matt Kuhlik in the 50-yard freestyle (21.82 seconds), senior Matt O'Brien in the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.08), senior Darrell Eacret in the 100-yard butterfly (52.15 seconds), sophomore Eagan Zettlemoyer in the 100-yard freestyle (48.01 seconds), freshman Christian Baker in the 100-yard backstroke (53.32 seconds), Wilson in the 500-yard freestyle (4:52.99), and Tao in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.51).
For the Emory women, senior Ellen Schafer was a part of three first-place efforts, including individual wins in the 50-yard freestyle (24.56 seconds) and the 100-yard freestyle (54.22 seconds). She also teamed with junior Dana Holt, senior Kylie McKenzie and freshman Grace Swinnerton to win the 400-yard freestyle relay with a mark of 3:39.25.
The Eagles also recorded three NCAA qualifying marks during the meet, including a pair from senior diver Sarah Greene. Greene won the one-meter dive with a score of 274.27, and followed with a score of 269.25 in the three-meter dive, good for another event victory. Sophomore Elizabeth Aronoff recorded Emory's only swimming 'B' cut of the day, winning the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.92.
Emory's 200-yard medley relay team of freshman Annelise Kowalsky, junior Nancy Larson, senior Laura Manor and senior Jennifer Pak won the event with a time of 1:52.85. Other individual event winners on Saturday included freshman Marissa Bergh in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:59.82), Kowalsky in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.46), junior McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg in the 200-yard individual medley (2:10.22), junior Megan Beach in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.14), sophomore Mikayla Carnley in the 100-yard backstroke (59.97 seconds), and Holt in the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.83).
The Eagles will have next week off, before returning to the pool from February 12th – 15th for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships, hosted by Emory at the WoodPEC.
