Junior Mitchell Cooper and sophomore Rebecca Upton of the Emory University swimming programs were named the University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week as announced by the association on Monday evening. It is the third UAA Athlete of the Week honor for Cooper this season while this marks the first for Upton.
Cooper took part in three events for the Eagles against Division II member Florida Southern in a dual meet this past Friday evening, taking first in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.77 and added a pair of second place showings in the 100 Backstroke (50.33) and 200 Backstroke (1:54.00). His 100 Backstroke time represented the lone NCAA "B" Cut time for any Emory swimmer (men or women) at the meet. The Eagles recorded four first place finishes out of 13 events on the men’s side in a 151-94 loss to the Moccasins.
Upton had a terrific individual performance for Emory against Florida Southern on Friday. She earned a first place finish in all three events she swam in to lead the team. Upton touched at 10:25.33 in the 1,000 Freestyle, 2:09.26 in the 200 Butterfly and 5:05.69 in the 500 Freestyle. The Emory women won 10 of the 13 events at the meet to win handily, 167-78, over the Moccasins.
The Eagles return to the pool on Saturday, January 23rd for a tri-meet against West Florida and Delta State in Pensacola, Florida. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11:00 am.
