The Emory University Swimming and Diving teams travel to Chicago, Illinois this week for the 30^th Annual University Athletic Association Championships. The four-day championship meet will be held from Wednesday, February 8^th through Saturday, February 11^th at the Ratner Athletic Center on the campus of the University of Chicago.

2017 Meet Outlook

The 2017 UAA Swimming and Diving Championships figures to be another competitive meet with more than half of the association teams ranked in the Top-10 in the latest CSCAA Top-25 national poll. In the women's poll, Emory enters as the nation's top-ranked team at 248 points with New York University (5^th, 199), Washington (6^th, 198), Chicago (8^th, 180), Carnegie Mellon (T-10^th, 163) and Rochester (22^nd, 34) trailing in the poll.

In the men's poll, six UAA programs are ranked including four in the Top-10 led by Emory in the No.-2 spot with 216 points, trailing No.-1 Denison by just four points. Behind the Eagles are NYU (6^th, 176), WashU (7^th, 169) and Carnegie Mellon (9^th, 148). Just outstide the Top-10 is Chicago at No.-11 with 122 points with Case Western Reserve farther down in the poll, slotted 24^th with 35 points.

Reign of Excellence

Both Eagles programs will look to continue their recent stretch of dominance over the rest of the conference as action begins on Wednesday as both squads will be in search of their 19^th consecutive team title. A win this week will also mark the 25^th overall for the Emory women and 19^th for the men.

2016 Championship Meet Recap

Before the Emory women collected their seventh consecutive and ninth overall NCAA Division III national championship in March 2016, the Eagles tallied their 18^th straight UAA team title and 24^th overall, finishing with 2,015 points – a commanding 685.5 points over second place Washington University (1,329.5). Chicago was third with 1,319 points followed by NYU (1,298), Carnegie Mellon (1,041), Rochester (673.5), Case Western Reserve (620) and Brandeis (331)

Cindy Cheng and Fiona Muir earned individual awards for the Eagles while Head Coach Jon Howell along with Assistant Coaches Cindy Fontana, Chris Marshall, John Petroff and Ross Spock were named the Swimming Coaching Staff of the Year for the third consecutive year. It marked the ninth time in program history Howell and his staff have earned the honor.

Cheng became eighth straight and 17^th-person overall to be named the UAA Swimmer of Year in program history following a performance that included individual association championships in the 200 Freestyle (1:49.59 – UAA Record), 200 Backstroke (1:59.46) and was part of two Championship relay teams in the 800 Freestyle (7:28.54 – UAA Record) and 400 Freestyle (3:22.71 – UAA Record).

Muir became the 11^th swimmer to be earn the Rookie of the Year award after she claimed individual event championships in the 50 Freestyle (23.29 – UAA Record), 100 Freestyle (50.14 – UAA Record) and All-UAA honors in the 100 Butterfly (55.25) in addition to four championship relay teams in the 200 Freestyle (1:33.19 – UAA Record), 400 Medley (3:45.73), 200 Medley (1:43.79) and the 400 Freestyle.

Rebecca Upton (500/1,650 Freestyle), Megan Campbell (100 Butterfly), Phoebe Edwards (400 IM) and Elizabeth Aronoff (100/200 Breaststroke) all came away with event titles as well for the Eagles. Furthermore, Emory swept all five relay championships, foreshadowing a thing to come at the 2016 NCAA Division III championships.

On the men's side, the Eagles took home the title by more than 150 points, finishing with a total of 1,595.5. Washington placed second at 1,444 points followed by NYU (1,305.5 points), Chicago (1,297), Carnegie Mellon (969), CWRU (836), Rochester (689) and Brandeis (310).

Emory saw three swimmers earn a combined four UAA titles with Chandler Lichtefeld leading the way with wins in the 200 and 400 IMs with Jared Scheuer taking the 200 Back with a UAA meet record time and Thomas Gordon claiming the 1,650 Freestyle.
