The Emory University swimming & diving teams were back in the pool Friday evening in the first of two sessions of the annual Emory Fall Invitational in Atlanta. The Eagles are handling hosting duties for the two-day meet, sharing the lanes with Wingate, Carson-Newman and Georgia Southern.
The Eagles put forth a strong showing during the first session, recording 10 swimming wins to go along with 21 NCAA B Cut marks. Six of the 10 wins came on the men's side as did 12 national standards.
Freshmen McKee Thorsen shined for the Emory men in the first session, posting two event wins. He tied his older brother, Crow Thorsen, in the 200 IM at 1:50.03 before adding another win in the 200 Fly at 1:48.87. Senior Jake Meyer turned in a victory in the 100 Breaststroke (53.50) as did sophomore Alexander Pollack in the 200 Backstroke (1:46.65). All five times represented NCAA B Cuts.
The Eagles swept both relay events as well on the men's side, with junior Johnny Bradshaw, sophomore Patrick Horton, freshman Hayden Tupper and sophomore Caden Bjornstad touching first in the 200 Freestyle at 1:22.66 to start the evening before Meyer, C. Thorsen, junior Jeff Echols and junior Adam Braunschweig concluded the night with a win in the 400 Medley with a NCAA B Cut of 3:16.31.
For the women, senior Penelope Helm and sophomore Isabel Huang were individual winners on day one with Helm taking the 500 Freestyle with a NCAA B Cut of 4:56.51 and Huang earning top honors in the 200 Backstroke at 2:01.32, leading four Eagles in the top four positions with all times coming in under the NCAA B Cut.
As did the men, the lady Eagles claimed wins in both relay events with freshmen Natalie Boorjian, senior Leaya Ma and sophomores Jane Sanderson and Penny Celtnieks recording a B Cut in the 200 Freestyle at 1:34.99 and the group of Helm, senior Megan Jungers, and freshmen Katie Cohen and Maren McDonald finished the night with a win in the 400 Medley, with a B Cut as well at 3:46.51.
Other top men's finishers during the first session included freshman Joao Lapagesse (2nd, 4:35.49) in the 500 Freestyle, sophomore Henri Bonnault (2nd, 55.36) in the 100 Breaststroke, Echols (2nd, 1:48.98) in the 200 Fly and Bjornstad (4th, 45.78) in the 100 Freestyle.
For the women, Huang added a second place effort (2:05.53) in the 200 IM), as did junior Jada Chatoor (4:59.50) in the 500 Freestyle, Sanderson (2:01.37) in the 200 Backstroke, senior Moshelle Borjigin (51.91) in the 100 Freestyle, and sophomore Ren Watt in the 1-meter dive (276.30).
The Emory Fall Invitational concludes on Saturday with the second session beginning at 11:00 AM.
