Swimming & Diving Competes at UGA in Final Dual Meet

The Emory University swimming and diving teams concluded the dual meet portion of its 2023-24 schedule on Saturday, traveling to in-state foe University of Georgia in Athens.

The Eagles had a strong showing in the pool taking on their Division I counterparts, compiling two event wins and 23 NCAA B Cuts. The Bulldogs swept the meet, winning by scores of 189-101 on the women's side and 181-90 in the men's events.

Posting wins for the Eagles were junior Sarah Daly in the 200 Fly as she recorded a season-best mark of 2:02.83 and senior Nicholas Goudie in the 50 Freestyle as he also turned in a season-best time of 20.12.

In the women's events, Emory registered nine additional NCAA B Cuts to go along with Daly with senior Penelope Helm earning a pair of qualifying marks in the 200 Freestyle (3rd, 1:49.83) and 100 Freestyle (3rd, 51.43). Sophomore Isabel Huang and freshman Katie Cohen both had second place finishes coupled with their B cuts with Huang touching at 2:01.08 in the 200 Backstroke and Cohen swimming a 1:04.07 in the 100 Breaststroke.

Junior Rosalie Gaudiani added a top-three showing in the 200 Fly with her season-best time of 2:04.11 while senior Megan Jungers was a fourth-place finisher in the 100 Backstroke at 55.83. Jungers also swam lead off in the Eagles' B Cut team in the 200 Medley Relay, pacing Emory to a third place finish with Cohen, freshman Maren McDonald and sophomore Jane Sanderson at 1:43.40.

Other top finishers for the women included McDonald in the 100 Fly (3rd, 56.42), senior Fiona Arwood in the 200 Breaststroke (3rd, 2:23.45), senior Sloane Donovan in the 500 Freestyle (5:00.43), sophomore Ren Watt in the 3-meter (270.45) and senior Tess Klugherz in the 1-meter (4th, 233.48).

The men's team saw 13 NCAA B Cuts to go along with Goudie's win in the 50 Freestyle with three of those times coming in the 200 Backstroke. Freshman Graham Zucker paced a trio of Eagles in the top-five with his season-best mark of 1:47.07 followed by senior Ryan Soh in fourth (1:48.41) and junior Alexander Pollack in fifth at 1:48.47.

Pollack was one of two Eagles on the day for the men to turn in NCAA B Cuts, adding another in the 200 Freestyle as he led the Eagles with his 1:38.88. Freshman McKee Thorsen picked up his two NCAA B Cuts in the 200 Fly (2nd, 1:46.45) and 400 IM (5th, 3:58.99), recording season-best marks in both disciplines.

Additional NCAA B Cuts came from junior Adam Braunschweig in the 100 Backstroke (5th, 48.66), senior Jake Meyer (2nd, 54.08) and sophomore Henri Bonnault (5th, 55.09) in the 100 Breaststroke, junior Jeff Echols in the 200 Fly (4th, 1:48.30) and junior Zachary Zhao in the 400 IM (4th, 3:58.85).

The men had NCAA B Cuts in both relay events as well with Soh, Meyer, Echols and Goudie combining for a time of 1:27.30 to finish second in the 200 Medley and the team of Goudie, junior Johnny Bradshaw, sophomore Caden Bjornstad and senior Harrison Pire took third in the 200 Freestyle at 1:21.30.

Senior Alex York rounded out the notable finishes for the Eagles on the afternoon, placing second on the 3-meter with a season-best score of 311.93 and was fifth in the 1-meter at 265.43.

The Eagles now turn their attention to the final stretch of the season, first sending a group to Auburn next weekend for the First-Chance Invitational prior to the UAA Championships in Chicago from February 14-17.
