Emory University sophomore Zahra Dawson and
junior Lorne McManigle advanced to the
quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Doubles Tournament during
the first day of competition at the individual championships in
Fredericksburg, VA.
Dawson and McManigle claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Greer Mackie
and Kayla Smith of DePauw University in the bracket’s round
of 16 teams. The Eagles will face Arianna Mokhtari and Taylor
Mannix of the University of California, Santa Cruz in the
quarterfinals tomorrow.
In the singles bracket, both McManigle (the reigning NCAA Division
III singles champion) and Dawson won their first round matches to
advance to the round of 16. Dawson, the fifth seeded player
in the tournament, bested Kate Klein of Washington University (Mo.)
6-2, 6-2, while McManigle claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over Melissa
Oosterhouse from Calvin College.
However, both would fall in the second round, as Dawson dropped a
7-6 (8-6), 6-0 decision to Williams College’s Kristin Alotta,
and McManigle lost 7-5, 6-0 to Grace Baljon of Williams.
