Dawson & McManigle Advance in NCAA Doubles Tournament

Emory University sophomore Zahra Dawson and junior Lorne McManigle advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Doubles Tournament during the first day of competition at the individual championships in Fredericksburg, VA.

Dawson and McManigle claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Greer Mackie and Kayla Smith of DePauw University in the bracket’s round of 16 teams.  The Eagles will face Arianna Mokhtari and Taylor Mannix of the University of California, Santa Cruz in the quarterfinals tomorrow.

In the singles bracket, both McManigle (the reigning NCAA Division III singles champion) and Dawson won their first round matches to advance to the round of 16.  Dawson, the fifth seeded player in the tournament, bested Kate Klein of Washington University (Mo.) 6-2, 6-2, while McManigle claimed a 6-4, 6-2 win over Melissa Oosterhouse from Calvin College.

However, both would fall in the second round, as Dawson dropped a 7-6 (8-6), 6-0 decision to Williams College’s Kristin Alotta, and McManigle lost 7-5, 6-0 to Grace Baljon of Williams.
