Emory University’s Lorne McManigle and
Zahra Dawson have been selected to compete at the
NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championships as part of the
32-person singles field, and the 16-team doubles competition.
Last season, McManigle won the singles title at the NCAA
Championships. This season, she ranks second in the region,
and has a record of 14-11 in singles play, while playing mostly out
of the first singles position. Earlier in the year, she
earned all-America honors by finishing first at the Wilson/ ITA
Fall Regional singles tournament, eventually finishing seventh at
the ITA Small College Championships.
Dawson was selected to the singles bracket in 2009 as well, but
suffered a first round defeat during her freshman campaign.
This year, Dawson ranks 13th in the region with a record
of 17-9 in singles matches, splitting time between first and second
singles. In the fall, she finished second to McManigle at the
Wilson/ ITA Regional Championships.
The two players have combined for a 17-10 record in doubles play,
and currently rank third among all Atlantic South Region doubles
pairings. McManigle and Dawson teamed up to win the doubles
portion of the Wilson/ ITA Fall Regional Championships, finishing
sixth at the Small College Nationals.
By virtue of being selected to the NCAA singles and doubles
tournaments, McManigle and Dawson will earn ITA all-America honors
for the spring season.
The seeding and draw for the singles and doubles championships will
be released on May 27th, the final day of the NCAA
Division III Women’s Tennis team championships.
The singles and doubles championships will take place from May
28th through May 30th, following the team
championships. The championships will be hosted by the
University of Mary Washington, at the Battleground Tennis Complex
in Fredricksburg, VA.
Emory will also be competing in the team championships, hosting a
regional bracket starting on May 14th. After a
first round bye, the Eagles will be facing the winner of
Friday’s Methodist-Agnes Scott match at 10:00 AM on Saturday.
