Emory's Clark & McManigle Advance to Quarterfinals in NCAA Individual Championships

Emory University freshman Gabrielle Clark won both of her matches on Friday to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Singles Championships, and later teamed with senior Lorne McManigle to advance to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw in Claremont, CA.

Clark, the top-seeded player in the singles draw, advanced to the round of 16 with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win over Sam Frank of Gustavus Adolphus College in the first round.  She played a closer match against Kellen Alberstone of Bowdoin College in the second round, but prevailed with a three-set 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 win.

Up next for Clark will be fifth-seeded Kristin Alotta of Williams College at noon ET on Saturday.  This will be the second meeting of the season between the two, after Clark claimed a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win when the squads met on March 31st.

Should Clark advance past Alotta, she will face the winner of the quarterfinal match between Chicago's third-seeded Kendra Higgins, and unseeded Carolyn Warren of John Hopkins at 4:00 PM ET on Saturday.  If Clark wins both matches on Saturday, she will play for the singles title at 3:00 PM ET on Sunday.

On the other side of the draw, Wylie rallied off victories in 12-straight games to defeat Nancy Worley of Williams College, 6-2, 6-0 in the round of 32.  After falling behind 2-0 in the first set, Wylie was able to rattle off six-straight games to win the frame, and continued the streak into the second set, shutting out Worley to claim the match victory.

However, Wylie would fall in the second round to Kristin Lim of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, 6-2, 6-3, the second seeded player in the draw.

Later in the day, Clark and McManigle defeated Kristin Cobb and Sarah Short of Denison University 6-3, 3-6, 6-0, to advance to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw.  The third-seeded Eagles pairing will face Brittany Faber and Leah Kepping of Middlebury College in the quarterfinals at 5:00 PM ET on Saturday.

This will be the second meeting of the season between the two doubles pairings, after Emory's duo defeated the pair from Middlebury 8-5 during the teams' match in Atlanta on March 25th.  Should the Eagles win, they will advance to the semifinals on Sunday.

By virtue of winning at least one match at the NCAA Championships, Clark, Wylie and McManigle assured themselves all-America honors this season.
