The Emory University women’s tennis team, ranked third among
NCAA Division III teams, will travel to Washington University in
St. Louis for the 2011 University Athletic Association (UAA)
Championships, from Friday, April 22nd – Sunday,
April 24th.
Emory will enter the highly-competitive field as the top-seeded
team, and will face eighth-seeded New York University on Friday at
9:00 AM. NYU will begin play at the tournament with a 1-8
overall record this season.
Should the Eagles win, they will face the victor of the first-round
match between fourth-seeded Washington University (Mo.) and the
fifth-seeded University of Rochester on Saturday at 1:30 PM.
Other first-round matches include the second-seeded University of
Chicago against seventh-seeded Case Western Reserve University, and
third-seeded Carnegie Mellon University against sixth-seeded
Brandeis University.
Besides Emory, other nationally-ranked teams participating include
Chicago (fourth), Carnegie Mellon (11th), and Washington
(15th). Included in the field are 15
regionally-ranked singles players and eight regionally-ranked
doubles pairings.
The Eagles won each of the first 22 UAA Championships, before
losing in the conference tournament for the first time last season,
falling to the University of Chicago 5-3 in the 2010 championship
match.
Emory has a 16-4 overall record this season, including a 12-1
record against NCAA Division III teams, and a 10-1 record against
ranked D-III opponents. The Eagles feature the Atlantic South
Region’s top-ranked singles player in Gabrielle
Clark, along with third-ranked Jordan
Wylie, 11th-ranked Lorne
McManigle, and 12th-ranked Zahra
Dawson. McManigle and Clark also combine for the
region’s fifth-ranked doubles squad, while Dawson and Wylie
are ranked sixth in the region.
All of the matches during the tournament are scheduled to be held
at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center in St. Louis, MO.
