Third-Ranked Eagles Split Doubleheader in Montgomery

The Emory University women's tennis team, ranked third among NCAA Division III teams, split a pair of matches on Sunday in Montgomery, AL, losing to Auburn University – Montgomery 5-4, but defeating Huntingdon College 9-0.

Facing one of the top-NAIA teams in the nation in Auburn Montgomery, the Eagles were spotted two matches, as the Senators played one doubles team and one singles player short.  In doubles action, Emory's first doubles team of Zahra Dawson and Lorne McManigle lost 8-0 to Jade Curtis and Kvetka Hajkova (the third-ranked NAIA doubles pair), while the second doubles team of Gabrielle Clark and Jordan Wylie dropped a narrow 9-8 (6) decision to Ana Veselinovic and Morgane Zowczak (the NAIA's fourth-ranked pairing).

In the singles matches, Clark, a freshman, earned a 7-5, 4-6, 10-5 win over Curtis, ranked ninth in the NAIA, while Emory freshman Taylor Brandt claimed a 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 win in the fifth singles match.  However, it was not enough for the Eagles, as Wylie, McManigle and Malavika Padmanabhan dropped the second, third, and fourth singles contests, respectively, to give AUM the 5-4 victory.

In the second match of the day, it was all Emory, as the Eagles came away with a 9-0 sweep over Huntingdon College.  The victory was highlighted by singles wins from Dawson, Lindsay Reidenbach, Wylie, Padmanabhan, Brandt and Brenna Kelly.  The Eagles doubles pairings of Padmanabhan and Kelly, McManigle and Dawson, and Reidenbach and Brandt also picked up wins.

The Eagles will return to action on Thursday, February 17th to face Brenau University on the road.
