The Emory University women’s tennis team, ranked first
among NCAA Division III teams, bounced back from a loss last week
with a 9-0 win over Berry College at the Woodruff P.E. Center on
Monday.
The shutout was the fourth of the year for the Eagles, and the
team’s second in the last three matches.
Emory opened up play by sweeping all three doubles matches for the
third straight match and 11th time overall this
season. In first doubles, Lorne McManigle
and Gabrielle Clark earned an 8-3 win over Kendal
Ruffner and Marina LeBrao. Playing in the second doubles
match, Brenna Kelly and Malavika
Padmanabhan claimed an 8-4 win over Caitlin Smith and
Laura Cunningham. Zahra Dawson and
Taylor Brandt rounded out doubles play with an 8-0
victory over Keri McGinnis and Rachel Sandoval.
Emory would continue its dominance in singles play, winning all six
matches in straight sets. Playing in the first singles match,
McManigle claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win over LeBrao, while Dawson earned a
6-2, 6-2 win in the second singles match over Ruffner.
Padmanabhan was victorious over Cunningham, 6-1, 6-0, in the third
doubles contest, and Laura Callava added on a
point with a 6-1, 6-1 win in the fourth match over Smith.
Capping off the win, Brandt beat Liz Stepp 6-0, 6-1 in the fifth
match, and Kelly earned a 6-1, 6-0 win over McGinnis in sixth
singles.
Emory improved to 15-3 on the season with the victory, while Berry
fell to 11-6 with the loss. The Eagles will be back on the
court on Saturday, as Emory will take on NCAA Division II member
Clayton State University in Morrow, GA at 1:00 PM.
