The third-ranked Emory University women’s tennis team ran
its winning streak to 12 matches, as the Eagles defeated
12th-ranked Middlebury College 6-3 in their opening
match of the Fab 10 Tournament.
Emory is now 12-2 overall this season, including a perfect 8-0
against NCAA Division III teams during the campaign. The
Eagles also improved to 7-0 against ranked D-III squads.
Emory took a 2-1 lead in the match after doubles, with wins in the
first contest from Gabrielle Clark and
Lorne McManigle (8-5 over Brittney Faber and Leah
Kepping, the second-ranked doubles team in the Northeast Region)
and in the second match from Zahra Dawson and
Jordan Wylie (9-7 over Victoria Aiello and Anna
Burke). In the third doubles match, Emory freshmen
Taylor Brandt and Malavika
Padmanabhan dropped a 9-7 decision to Sally Wilkey and
Dorrie Paradies.
In singles play, Clark ran her winning streak to nine-straight
matches with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Aiello, the ninth-ranked singles
player in the Northeast Region, in the first match. In third
singles, McManigle claimed a 6-3, 7-5 win over Wilkey, while Dawson
defeated Faber 6-2, 7-5 in the fourth singles match, and
Padmanabhan was victorious over Paradies, 6-1, 6-1 in the fifth
singles match. Wylie retired trailing 4-3 in the first set
against Kepping in the second singles match, while freshman
Taylor Brandt fell 6-3, 6-4 to Burke in the sixth
singles match.
With the loss, Middlebury dropped to 3-1 on the year.
Emory will return to action at the Fab 10 Tournament on Sunday,
facing off against eighth-ranked Tufts University.
