#3 Emory Women’s Tennis Advances to NCAA Quarterfinals with 5-0 Win over #18 Sewanee

The third-ranked Emory University women's tennis team earned its 21st trip to the NCAA Division III Quarterfinals, defeating the 18th-ranked University of the South 5-0 in their third-round match in Sewanee, TN on Saturday.

The Eagles and Tigers were forced indoors due to rain for the second-straight day at the Sewanee regional, but it did not serve as a deterrent for Emory, which improved to 21-4 on the season with the victory.  The University of the South's season will come to a close with a 21-7 record.

Emory swept through the doubles matches for the second-straight match and 16th time in 25 matches this season.  In first doubles, Gabrielle Clark and Lorne McManigle earned an 8-4 win over Kate Stanford and Jenny Liles.  Jordan Wylie and Zahra Dawson followed with an 8-2 win over Michelle Flume and Anne Garland in second doubles.  Malavika Padmanabhan and Brenna Kelly wrapped up doubles play with an 8-3 win over Laura Szyperski and Lindsay Wilburn, giving the team a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.

Emory picked up its singles victories from Wylie in the second match and McManigle in third singles. McManigle struck the first blow of singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Flume, and Wylie clinched the team's third round victory with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Liles.

Clark was winning 7-5, 2-2 over Kate Stanford in first singles when the match was stopped.  The other three singles matches did not start play before the team victory was decided.

The 5-0 victory marked the ninth of the season for the Eagles, and the team's fifth in the last six matches.  The home loss was the first of the season for Sewanee, which had won each of its previous seven matches at home during the season, including a pair during the NCAA Tournament.

The Eagles will now advance to the quarterfinals in Claremont, CA, where Emory will face eighth-ranked Washington & Lee University (20-6) on Tuesday, May 24th.  The Eagles defeated the Generals 8-1 on neutral territory at Wofford College on March 20th.

More information on the Eagles' quarterfinal match will be posted to EmoryAthletics.com as it becomes available.
