No. 3 Eagles Run Win Streak to 13 with 7-2 Victory over #8 Tufts

The Emory University women’s tennis team’s winning streak hit 13 matches on Sunday, as the third-ranked Eagles defeated eighth-ranked Tufts University, 7-2, at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

The Eagles remained perfect against NCAA Division III opponents this season, improving to 9-0 in D-III matches, seven of which have been against top-25 ranked opponents.  Tufts is also the fifth team currently ranked in the top-10 in the national that Emory has beaten this season.  Emory improved to 13-2 overall with the win, while the Jumbos dropped to 4-2.

Emory won two of the three doubles matches, as Zahra Dawson and Jordan Wylie defeated Tufts’ Lindsay Katz and Eliza Flynn 8-4 in the second doubles match, and Brenna Kelly and Malavika Padmanabhan won the third doubles match 8-3 over Samantha Gann and Janice Lam.  The Eagles’ first doubles pairing of Gabrielle Clark and Lorne McManigle fell 8-4 to Julia Brown and Shelci Bowman, bringing the score to 2-1 heading into single play.

Clark made a strong statement in the first singles match, as the freshman picked up a straight-set 6-3, 6-2 win over Brown, the reigning NCAA Division III Singles Champion, giving the Eagles a 3-1 advantage.  The Eagles also received straight sets wins from Wylie over Bowman in the second singles match (6-2, 6-0) and from Dawson over Flynn in the fourth singles match (6-4, 6-4).

Padmanabhan added to the Eagles’ win with a come-from-behind 2-6, 7-5, 10-2 win over Lauren Hollender in the fifth singles match, while senior Laura Callava came back in her matches as well, winning 1-6, 6-4, 10-7 over Gann in sixth singles.  The only Emory singles loss of the day came from McManigle, who fell 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 in the third singles match.

Emory will return to action at the Fab 10 Tournament on Tuesday, as the Eagles will host 10th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College at 3:00 PM.
