Third-Ranked Women's Tennis Falls to #2 Williams

In a battle of two of the top-three ranked NCAA Division III women's tennis team, the third-ranked Emory Eagles  saw their 14 match winning streak come to an end, falling to second-ranked Williams College 5-4 in the final match of the Fab 10 Tournament at the Woodruff P.E. Center.

Emory fell to 14-3 on the season with the loss, the team's first since February 13th.  It was also the Eagles' first loss of the season to a NCAA Division III opponent.  Williams improved to 9-2 overall with the win.

Emory took early control of the match with a sweep of the three doubles contests for the second-straight match and 10th time overall this season.  Emory freshman Gabrielle Clark and senior Lorne McManigle came out on the right side of a nail-biter in the first doubles contest, defeating the Northeast Region's fourth-ranked pairing of Kristin Alotta and Nicole Reich 9-8, with a 7-3 tiebreaker.  Playing in the second doubles match, junior Zahra Dawson and sophomore Jordan Wylie also claimed a win over a regionally-ranked pairing, defeating the Northeast's third-ranked duo in Taylor French and Nancy Worley.  Freshmen Brenna Kelly and Malavika Padmanabhan capped off the Emory win with an 8-6 win over Lucy Marchese and Kathleeen Elkins in the third doubles match.

Padmanabhan and Kelly improved to 13-1 together in doubles play, the highest win total by an Eagles' duo this season.  Meanwhile, Dawson and Wylie remained perfect together with an 8-0 record, while Clark and McManigle raised their record to 6-2.

However, the Ephs turned the tide in the match during singles play, winning five of the six singles matches to claim the team victory.  Emory's only singles win came from Clark in the first singles match, as the freshman earned a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win over Alotta, the Northeast's second-ranked singles player.  It was the 12th-straight singles victory for Clark, who improved to 20-4 overall, the best record on the team this season.

The Eagles will look to rebound early next week, as the Eagles will welcome Berry College to the Woodruff P.E. Center for a 3:00 PM match on Monday, April 4th.
