Eagles Win Ninth-Straight with 4-3 Victory over Division I Wofford

The Emory University women’s tennis team captured its ninth-consecutive victory on Saturday, defeating NCAA Division I Wofford College 4-3 in Spartanburg, SC.

Playing at an NCAA Division I school, all three doubles matches counted for just one point, with the team that wins the majority of the three matches earning the score.  Emory would earn the point, sweeping all three doubles matches for the third-straight match.

In first doubles, freshman Gabrielle Clark and senior Lorne McManigle earned an 8-5 win over Emilia Milovanovic and Haley Baird, while junior Zahra Dawson and sophomore Jordan Wylie claimed an 8-5 victory as well, over Julia Paulson and Sarah Evans in the second doubles match.  Freshmen Brenna Kelly and Malavika Padmanabhan capped off the sweep with an 8-4 win in the third doubles match over Lucy Schermerhorn and Samantha Sullivan, earning the point for the Eagles.

In singles play, Emory received victories from Clark in the first singles match over Molovanovic 6-4, 6-2, and junior Laura Callava in the fifth singles match, 6-1, 6-1.  However, Dawson dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Evans in third singles, Padmanabhan suffered a 6-2, 6-1 defeat to Paulson in the fourth singles contest, and Kelly fell 7-6 (8), 6-2 to Meagan Laframboise.

It would all come down to the second match between Wylie and Baird.  After falling behing with a 3-6 loss in the first set, Wylie would battle back, winning the next two frames 6-3, 6-2, to claim both a personal victory and the team win for the Eagles.

Emory improved to 9-2 on the season with the win, while Wofford dropped to 10-6 on the season.

The Eagles will return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader at Wofford College against a pair of ranked NCAA Division III teams, playing ninth-ranked Washington & Lee University at 9:00 AM and 14th-ranked DePauw University at 1:00 PM in Spartanburg, SC.
