The fourth-ranked Emory University women's tennis team threated top-ranked Williams College at the Fab 5 Tournament in Lexington, Virginia, but ultimately fell short with a 5-4 loss to the Ephs on Friday.
Emory took a lead after doubles play, as Emory received an 8-5 victory from sophomore Gabrielle Clark and senior Zahra Dawson in the first doubles match, and a 9-7 win from sophomores Malavika Padmanabhan and Brenna Kelly in second doubles. Williams' third doubles duo claimed an 8-3 win over Emory freshmen Catharine Harris and Lauren Pinsky to bring the score to 2-1, heading into singles play.
The Eagles earned come-from-behind three-set victories in each of the top-two matches, with Clark winning the first singles match 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, and junior Jordan Wylie earning a hard-fought 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-2 win in second singles. However, the Eagles were unable to win a fifth and deciding match, and Williams was able to escape with the victory.
The loss put an end to Emory's seven-match winning streak, as the Eagles fell to 7-3 on the campaign. Williams improved to 8-0 on the season with the win.
The Eagles will face another test tomorrow, as Emory will wrap up play at the Fab 5 Tournament against host Washington & Lee University at 10:00 AM.
