The Emory University women's tennis team suffered just its second loss of the season to a Division III opponent, as the second-ranked Eagles were edged 5-4 by seventh-ranked Middlebury College.
The Eagles fell into an immediate hole, winning just one of the three doubles matches. Emory's only winning duo was their first-doubles pairing of Gabrielle Clark and Zahra Dawson, who claimed an 8-3 victory.
Emory came close to achieving the come-from-behind win, as Malavika Padmanabhan won the fourth-singles match 6-3, 6-3, Brenna Kelly claimed a 6-1, 2-6, 6-0 win in fifth singles, and Lauren Pinsky won 6-2, 6-4 in sixth singles. However, Lok Sze Leung defeated Clark 6-2, 6-3 in first singles, and Jordan Wylie fell 6-3, 6-4 in the second singles match.
With the score tied 4-4, the contest would come down to the third singles match between Dawson and Middlebury's Leah Kepping. After Dawson won the first set 6-1, Kepping battled back to even the match with a 7-5 win in the second set. The third set, tied at six, went into a tiebreaker, but Kepping was able to pull out the victory, defeating Dawson 7-4 in the tiebreaker, giving Middlebury the team win.
Emory dropped the 10-4 on the season with the loss, while Middlebury remained perfect on the season, improving to 10-0.
Emory will continue its tough Northeast swing on Saturday against third-ranked Amherst College at 1:00 PM.
