#5 Emory Women’s Tennis Downs #12 Bowdoin; Will Take on #1 Williams in NCAA Semifinals

Fifth-ranked Emory University rolled to a dominating 5-2 victory over 12th-ranked Bowdoin College in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships on Monday in Cary, North Carolina, advancing to the semifinals of the tournament on Tuesday.

The Eagles will advance to face top-ranked Williams College in the semifinals on Tuesday at 12:30 PM at the Cary Tennis Park.

In doubles action, the Eagles claimed two out of the three matches to grab an early 2-1 lead over the Polar Bears.  Emory's first doubles pairing of Gabrielle Clark and Zahra Dawson supplied a dominating performance, defeating Kellen Alberstone and Emma Lewis 8-0.  After Taylor Brandt and Lauren Pinsky suffered an 8-1 loss to Kate Winingham and Emily Lombardi at third doubles, Brenna Kelly and Malavika Padmanabhan responded with a come-from-behind 8-6 win over Emma Chow and Chantalle Lavertu at second doubles to give the Eagles an edge heading into singles play.

Clark claimed another convincing win in the first singles match, winning 6-0, 6-0 over Alberstone to extend Emory's team lead to 3-1.  Dawson followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Lavertu at third singles.  After a 6-3, 6-1 loss for Padmanabhan in fourth singles, the match-clinching victory came shortly thereafter from Kelly, who defeated Emily Lombardi 6-1, 6-1 at fifth singles.

Emory raised its season ledger to 18-5, while Bowdoin's season came to a close with an overall mark of 13-9.

With the win, Emory will advance to the semifinals of the NCAA Championships for the fourth-consecutive season, and the 13th time in the program's history.  The Eagles will take on a familiar opponent in Williams, which has ended Emory's run for the championship in two of the last three seasons, including the 2010 championship match.  The Ephs defeated Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges 5-1 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.

Williams has an overall record of 22-2 this season, including a 5-4 win over the Eagles on March 23rd of this season.  Emory is 7-9 all-time against Williams.

On the other side of the draw, second-ranked Chicago and third-ranked Amherst both advanced, and will face each other in the semifinals at 12:30 PM on Tuesday.  The winners of the two semifinal matches will play for the Division III title at 12:30 PM on Wednesday, with the losing teams playing for third place at the same time.

Also taking place on Tuesday will be the announcement of the draws for the Individual Singles and Doubles Championships, which will begin on Thursday, May 24th.  The draws will be announced after 6:00 PM on Tuesday.
