Emory University sophomore Melissa Goodman was undefeated in three third-singles matches and a pair of doubles contests, helping lead the second-ranked Eagles to their 26th University Athletic Association Championship. During Thursday’s 9-0 quarterfinal victory over New York University, Goodman picked up a 6-0, 6-3 win against Laila El Dessouki. She earned a pair of wins in the team’s 9-0 victory over the 15th-ranked University of Chicago on Friday, guiding the Eagles to the conference championship match with at 8-1 win at third doubles with Rebecca Seigler over Sruthi Ramaswami and Lucy Tang, and a 6-1, 6-0 singles with over Jasmine Lee. Goodman capped off her weekend with a 9-8 (4) win over Nicholle Torres and Brooke Tsu at third doubles, and a 6-3, 6-4 singles win over Torres, as Emory defeated seventh-ranked Carnegie Mellon University 7-2 on Saturday. She improved to 14-4 overall in singles play this year (including a 6-0 mark as Emory’s no. 3 singles player) and to 17-5 in doubles action. Goodman and the Eagles will head into the NCAA Division III Championships with a 16-3 overall record.
