No. 1 Emory Rolls to 8-1 Win over #12 Sewanee on ‘Senior Day’

The top-ranked Emory University Women's Tennis Team rolled to its seventh win in its last eight matches on Thursday afternoon, as the Eagles claimed an 8-1 win over the 12th-ranked University of the South at the Woodruff Physical Education Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

Prior to the match, the Eagles honored the three graduating senior players on the team – Catharine Harris, Rebecca Siegler and captain Danielle Truitt.  Together, the four have helped Emory go 77-16 over the last four years, including an NCAA Division III Championship in 2014, and three-straight top-three finishes in the NCAA Tournament.

The Eagles took two of the three doubles matches to start play on Thursday, with freshman Anna Fuhr and sophomore Michelle Satterfield defeating Bronte Goodhue and Lindsey Liles (the top-ranked doubles pair in the region) 8-4 at first doubles, followed by an 8-0 win at second doubles from sophomore Melissa Goodman and junior Beatrice Rosen over Kate Johnston and Clementina Davila.

Sewanee was able to salvage a doubles point in the third match, with Anne Veron and Maggie Crumbliss defeating Emory's Truitt and Siegler 8-5.

Play was moved inside in the middle of the doubles competition, due to lightning in the area.

The Eagles would go on to sweep all six singles matches, led by victories at first singles from Rosen, 7-5, 6-4 over Goodhue, and at second singles from Satterfield, 6-2, 7-5 over Liles.  Goodman claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win at third singles over Christina Merchant, while sophomore Katarina Su defeated Crumbliss 6-4, 6-2 at fourth singles.  Rounding out the match, junior Madison Gordon picked up a point at fifth singles over Davila, and Harris claimed a three-set win over Veron, 4-6, 7-6 (4), 12-10.

Emory improved to 12-3 overall this season with the win, while Sewanee dropped to 12-4 with the loss.  It also marked the 21st-consecutive victory at home for the Eagles.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, April 4th at 11:00 am at Columbus State University, the ninth-ranked NCAA Division II team.
