Top-seeded and nationally second-ranked Emory University opened play at the 2015 University Athletic Association Women's Tennis Championships at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida on Thursday morning with a 9-0 win over eighth-seeded New York University in the quarterfinals.
Emory will advance to the semifinals of the UAA Championships, taking on fourth-seeded and nationally 15th-ranked Chicago (12-9), which defeated fifth-seeded and 21st-ranked Case Western Reserve on Thursday by a 8-1score. The Eagles' match against the Maroons is slated for a 2:00 pm start on Friday.
The Eagles opened play on Thursday with 8-0 wins at both second and third doubles, with freshman Bridget Harding and sophomore Katarina Su defeating Madeline King and Mari Tzakis in the second match, and senior Danielle Truitt and freshman Julie Fowler topping Jazmin Colling and Alexandra Ziarko in the third match. At the first doubles match, sophomore Michelle Satterfield and freshman Anna Fuhr claimed an 8-5 victory against Carmen Lai and Laila El Dessouki.
The Eagles would go on to win each of the six matches in straight sets. At first singles, junior Beatrice Rosen bested Lai 6-2, 6-3, with Satterfield winning 6-3, 6-1 over Tzakis at second singles. In the third match, it was sophomore Melissa Goodman defeating El Dessouki 6-0, 6-3, followed by a 6-2, 6-2 win for Harding over King at fourth singles, a 6-0, 6-1 victory for Fuhr over Ziarko at fifth singles, and a 6-0, 6-0 win at sixth singles for Fowler over Colling.
Thursday's match include three rain delays. The match, which started at 9:00 am, ended at close to 6:00 pm.
Emory improved to 14-3 overall this season with the victory on Thursday, including a 10-1 mark against Division III opponents. NYU dropped to 4-5 for the 2015 campaign.
