Emory Wins 26th UAA Women’s Tennis Championship

The second-ranked Emory University Women's Tennis team claimed its 26th University Athletic Association Championship in 28 years of conference competition with a 7-2 win over seventh-ranked Carnegie Mellon University at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida on Saturday.

It marked the third-straight year the Eagles have claimed the conference title.  Emory improved to 16-3 on the season with the win, while Carnegie Mellon dropped to 15-6 with the loss.

The Eagles took two of the three doubles matches, with sophomore Katarina Su and freshman Bridget Harding claiming an 8-3 win over Vanessa Pavia and Angela Pratt at second doubles and senior Rebecca Siegler and sophomore Melissa Goodman earning a tiebreaker victory, 9-8 (7) over Nicholle Torres and Brooke Tsu at third doubles.  The Eagles' lone setback in doubles came in the first match, where sophomore Michelle Satterfield and freshman Anna Fuhr fell to Bryn Raschke and Cori Sidell 8-6.

Emory went on to pick up wins at five of the six singles matches as well, including a 6-1, 6-2 victory at second singles from Satterfield over Pratt.  Goodman followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the third match over Torres, with Su claiming a three-set win, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 triumph over Tsu at fourth singles.  Rounding out the victory, Harding won 7-5, 6-0 at fifth singles over Raschke, and junior Madison Gordon defeated Cori Sidell 7-6 (1), 6-2 at sixth singles.  Junior Beatrice Rosen suffered the only loss in singles play for the Eagles, falling 6-2, 6-3 to Pavia at first singles.

By virtue of winning the conference tournament, the Eagles will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships.  Emory will find out where it is headed for the first three rounds of the tournament, to be held Friday, May 8th through Sunday, May 10th, when the full draw is released by 7:00 pm on Monday, May 4th on NCAA.com.
