The second-ranked Emory University women's tennis team will be making its eighth-straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship quarterfinals, and its 25th overall, after defeating the 12th-ranked University of the South 5-2 in the regional final in Sewanee, Tennessee on Saturday afternoon.
The final rounds of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships, hosted by Ohio Northern University at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio, will begin on Monday, May 18th. Emory's quarterfinal opponent will the winner of the regional draw at Bowdoin College, with the hosts, Ithaca, Simmons and Middlebury all still alive in the draw as of Saturday.
Emory (18-3) won two of the three doubles matches, and added three wins in singles competition to clinch the victory. The Eagles' two doubles victories came from sophomore Katarina Su and freshman Bridget Harding, 8-3 over Kate Johnston and Clementina Davila in the second match, and sophomore Melissa Goodman and freshman Rebecca Siegler in the third match, 8-2 over Annie Veron and Maggie Crumbliss. Emory's lone doubles setback was in the first match, where freshman Anna Fuhr and sophomore Michelle Satterfield were edged 9-7 by Bronte Goodhue and Lindsey Liles.
The bottom three singles players in the Eagles' order would secure the victory. At fourth singles, Harding defeated Davila 6-1, 6-1. Junior Madison Gordon claimed a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Crumbliss in the fifth match, and Fuhr defeated Veron 6-1, 6-3 in the third contest.
Sewanee's Liles earned a victory over Goodman at second singles, 6-0, 6-1, for the Tiger's only singles victory of the day. Emory's Su was up a set on Sewanee's Christina Merchant, and Satterfield was down a set to Goodhue, when play was stopped after the Eagles clinched the win.
Sewanee's season came to a close with an overall record of 19-6, with two of the losses coming against Emory.
