Women’s Tennis Opens Season at Elon Fall Invitational

The Emory University women's tennis team opened the 2023-24 season on Friday competing at the Elon Fall Invitational at Elon University. The Eagles were the only Division III program at the tournament competing alongside Campbell, East Tennessee State, ECU, Elon, James Madison, Norfolk State, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, UNCG and Virginia Tech. 

Nine different Eagles competed in the singles portion of the invitational highlighted by senior Ilayda Baykan, junior Eliza McPherron and sophomores Iris Berman and Alyssa Margolin who won their matches in their respective brackets. In the Powell draw, Berman collected a straight set win (6-2, 6-3) over JMU's Alex Prudente while McPherron defeated Taylor Rieckert of Virginia Tech with a three-set decision (4-6, 6-2, 6-1) to advance in the Acorn bracket.

Competing in the Oak draw, Baykan earned a straight set win (6-1, 6-0) over Maria Picaso Martin of NCCU to advance followed by a 6-0, 6-0 victory from Margolin over NSU's Isabella Cottrell.

The doubles tandem of McPherron and Margolin started the season strong with an 8-7 decision over ETSU in the Powell draw before dropping their match against JMU 8-3. They will compete for third place on Saturday against UNCG.

Freshman Yanire Marte and sophomore Alessia Martinez competed in the Oak draw in a round robin style and picked up wins against ECU (8-5) and NCCU (8-2) on Friday. They will compete again on Saturday against NSU.

The Eagles will continue action in both singles and doubles on Saturday, September 23 with play slated to start at noon due to inclement weather in the area.
