Women’s Tennis Bests Carnegie Mellon, 6-1, in ITA Indoors Consolation Match

The No. 6 ranked Emory women's tennis team continued play at the ITA National Indoor Team Championships in Nicholasville, Kentucky on Saturday morning. After narrowly dropping their opening match against Johns Hopkins on Friday, the No. 4 seeded Eagles bounced back in dominating fashion in their consolation match. Taking on UAA-foe and No. 8 seeded Carnegie Mellon, the Eagles took down the Tartans, 6-1, to advance to the event's fifth-place match on Sunday.

The Eagles opened the day with doubles play, looking to seize the lone doubles point for the day. Sophomore Izzy Antanavicius and freshman Yanire Marte earned the first win of the morning for the Eagles on court three, winning their match, 6-2. The two found themselves knotted up at 2 after the first four points but ripped off four straight point wins to earn the victory.

Emory's top pairing of senior Ana Cristina Perez and sophomore Emily Kantrovitz stayed undefeated on the doubles court this weekend, clinching the match's double point with a 6-4 win. After Perez and Kantrovitz had secured the doubles point for the Eagles, junior Eliza McPherron and sophomore Iris Berman narrowly won their match on court two, 7-5, to complete the sweep of the Tartans.

Moving into singles play with a 1-0 lead over Carnegie Mellon, the Eagles needed to secure three singles wins to clinch the match win.

Marte made quick work of her opponent on court five, winning her match in straight sets, both by a score of 6-0. The freshman improves to 2-0 in singles matches this weekend after winning her match in sixth singles on Friday.

It wasn't long until Emory secured its third point of the day when Antanavicius won her match in the No. 4 position. She also won in straight sets, winning both by a score of 6-2, to put the Eagles on the brink of victory with a 3-0 lead.

Coming off a loss in a three-set thriller on Friday, senior Ilayda Baykan bounced back in her match against the Tartans. Playing out of the No. 3 position, Baykan secured the first set, 6-4, before running away with a 6-2 win in the second set to earn Emory's fourth and match-clinching point.

After the match had been won, McPherron won her match on court six in three sets. The junior easily won her first set, 6-1, before dropping the second set, 6-4. McPherron locked in for the final set, though, winning 10-5.

Playing in the No. 1 singles position, Kantrovitz also won her match in three sets. The sophomore dropped her first set 6-4 but rallied back to win 6-4 and 10-5 to pull out the Eagles' sixth and final point.

Perez narrowly fell in three sets on court two, dropping the first set, 6-2, before forcing a third set with a 7-5 win in set two. However, Perez dropped the tiebreaker, 10-8.

With the win, the Eagles will play in the tournament's fifth-place match on Sunday against No. 6 seeded MIT. The match against MIT will start at 8:00 AM in Nicholasville, Kentucky.
