Women’s Tennis Snaps Losing Streak with 7-2 Victory against #10 Redlands

The Emory University women's tennis program saw its two-match losing streak come to an end on Friday afternoon defeating the No. 10 ranked Redlands Bulldogs 7-2.

The Eagles improve to 5-4 on the season with one more matchup on their California trip. Highlighting the Emory roster this season has been sophomore Iris Berman who has won six of her last seven singles matches with five of those coming against ranked teams. Fellow sophomore Emily Kantrovitz has also had an impressive start to the spring season taking seven of her last nine singles matchups.

Emory started the day taking two doubles matches with Berman and partner Eliza McPherron winning their doubles matchup by virtue of an 8-7 decision on court two. The duo of sophomore Izzy Antanavicius and freshman Yanire Marte went ahead in their matchup 2-1 before their opponents retired earning the Eagles' second point of the day.

Starting in singles competition was Marte on court six and after going down 2-1 in the first set, she made a comeback to take her first set 6-3 before dominating her second set with a 6-2 decision. Berman followed right behind Marte with a 6-0, 6-4 victory on court five helping the Eagles go up 4-1 with her fourth straight singles win.

The Bulldogs were able to get their second point of the day with a singles win on court four followed by a 6-4, 6-3 decision on court two from senior Ana Cristina Perez. Fellow senior Ilayda Baykan snapped her singles slump after coming up with a big 6-4, 6-0 straight set win, her third of the season.

With the win in sight, the final matchup came to Kantrovitz on court one. After winning her first set 6-3 she dropped the second set 7-5 forcing a third set. She battled back to a big 10-5 win in set three securing the seventh point for the Eagles.

Emory will conclude its California stint with a neutral match against No. 4 ranked Middlebury on Saturday, March 16 at 12:00 PM EST.
