2002-03 Women's Track & Field Headline Archive

(June 16) Colleen Brady has been named to the Verizon Academic All-America third team for women's cross country/track and field. Previously, she was voted to the Academic All-District first team.

Brady is one of two sophomores among the 46 honorees on the first, second and third teams.

Brady carried a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average as a neuroscience and behavioral biology major. In cross country last fall, Brady made the all-region, all-state and all-conference teams.


(May 29) Colleen Brady, Angela Davie and Andrea Midyett have been named to the Verizon Academic All-District First Team for women's cross country/track and field. All three become eligible for the Academic All-America team to be announced this summer.

Emory is the only school to have three honorees on the 10-person all-district first team.

Brady carried a 4.00 cumulative grade point average (on 4.0 scale) as a neuroscience and behavioral biology major. In cross country last fall, Brady made the all-region, all-state and all-conference teams.

Davie made the cross country All-America team last fall, the first Emory sophomore ever to do so. She finished 27th at the NCAA national championships. Davie had a 3.77 GPA as a business administration major.

Midyett qualified for the NCAA outdoor track championships in the 800-meter run. She was selected the track team's Most Valuable Performer. Midyett, a biology major, carried a 3.41 GPA.


(May 24) Senior Andrea Midyett concluded her collegiate career with a time of 2:14.41 in the 800-meter run at the NCAA Division III national championships.

Midyett did not qualify for the finals in the event. She placed 14th out of 20 competitors in the event.

Emory has no other women's competitors at the national championship meet.


(May 12) Senior Andrea Midyett finished the 800-meter run in a time of 2:15.98 at the North Central College Invitational. She finished fifth of 24 competitors in a field that included several Division I runners. Midyett currently holds the seventh-fastest time nationally in the event this season and has provisionally qualified in the event for the NCAA national championships to be held in Canton, New York, on May 22-24.


(April 27) Emory University finished fourth at the University Athletic Association championships.This is only the fifth time in the 16-year history of the conference championships that Emory did not finish in the top two.

Andrea Midyett was named the women's Most Outstanding Performer for the meet. The senior won the 800-meter run in a time of 2:12.92 breaking the conference record by a second and a half. This is Midyett's second UAA outdoor crown to go along with her 2001 title.Her winning time this year is nearly seven seconds faster than her 2001 time. Midyett was second in the event as a freshman and third last season. She is the third person in school history to win the MOP award along with Sarah Byrd (2002) and Kahlilah Jennings (1997).

Emory athletes accounted for six all-conference honors (top three finish) in individual events. Angela Davie was runner-up in the 5,000-meter run as was Katie Bergfeld in the shot put. Finishing third were Emily Watts, 100-meter dash; Laura Young, pole vault; and Alina Carron, discus.


(April 20) Emory University finished fifteenth out of seventeen teams at the Vanderbilt Invitational, a field which included NCCA Division I opponents.

Andrea Midyett finished the race with a career best time of 2:16.43 in the 800 meters. Midyett's time is the best in the conference this season. She finished 10th in a field of 50 runners, most of them from NCAA Division I schools.

Angela Davie placed second in the 5,000-meter run with her time of 18.00.23


(April 13) Emory University finished second out of five teams at the Emory Quadrangular.

Angela Davie's time of 4 minutes and 49.32 in the 1500-meter run is the second best in the UAA this season. Davie's time of 2:27.45 in the 800-meter run is her career best time at Emory. Alina Carron also placed first in the Hammer throw with her distance of 32.24 meters. Anna Lamont earned first place in the Javelin throw with her distance of 22.17 meters.

Also posting top two finishes for the Eagles: Katie Bergfield (Hammer Throw), Andrea Midyett (400-meter dash), Colleen Brady (5000-meter run), and Anna Lamont (High Jump).


(April 6) Emory finished third out of 10 teams at the Sewanee Relays. At the Duke Invitational, Angela Davie ran her best 5,000 time of 17:55.26 this season.

Also posting top-three finishes for the Eagles at Sewanee were: Rebecca Ely (100-meter hurdles), Anna Lamont (high jump), Emily Watts (100-meter dash), and Katie Bergfield (shot put).


(March 29) Emory finished sixth of 25 teams at the Emory University Classic, a field which included several NCAA Division I and II opponents.

Andrea Midyett won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.74, nearly three seconds ahead of her nearest competitor. Angela Davie finished first in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:50.72.

Also posting top-five finishes for the Eagles were: Rebecca Ely (100-meter hurdles-third), Anna Lamont (high jump-third), Janina Kreider (400-meter dash-fourth), and Lauren Kretz (3,000-meter steeplechase-fifth). The 4x400-meter relay team finished third in that event.


(March 8) Emory University finished fourth at the University Athletic Association indoor track championship.

Katie Bergfeld won the shot put for the Eagles with a distance of 11.26 meters. Emily Watts (55-meter dash), Andrea Midyett (800-meter run), and Angela Davie (5,000-meter run) all finished second in their events.


(March 1) Emory University finished fourth out of 11 teams at the University of the South Invitational.

Laura Young won the pole vault with a height of 9-feet-6 inches (2.90 meters) tying her season best. Rebecca Ely set a personal record in the in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.86 seconds, the second best by anyone in the University Athletic Association this season. Emily Watts was the runner-up in the 55-meter dash.

Emory heads to the conference indoor championships next weekend. Last season, the Eagles were third in the UAA.


(Feb. 21) A small handful of Emory University athletes went to the University of Tennessee Invitational.

Sarah Dilley ran the 55-meter hurdles in 10.27 seconds. Evelyn Cage was timed in 1:05.58 in the 400-meter dash.

Emory competes in the U. of the South Invitational next weekend as a final preparation for the conference meet the following week.


(Feb. 15) Emory finished sixth at the CCIW-UAA Challenge in Kenosha, Wis. The meet brings together selected schools from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin and the University Athletic Association.

Angela Davie and Colleen Brady finished 1-2 in the 5,000-meter run. Davie's winning time of 18 minutes and 13.84 seconds was the third fastest by a UAA runner this season while Brady's time, 18:39.32, was fifth fastest.

Andrea Midyett placed third in the 800-meter run at 2:20.93, less than two seconds away from the provisional qualifying time for the NCAA national meet. This was the fourth time this season she has run 2:22.02 or faster in the event.


(Feb. 8) Colleen Brady and Andrea Midyett were winners at the DePauw (Ind.) Invitational.

Brady was first in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18 minutes and 41.25 seconds. That broke the meet record and placed her fourth in the conference for top times this season.

Midyett was timed at 2:20.88 in the 800-meter run breaking the meet record. She missed the provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA national meet by 1.88 seconds.

Angela Davie also came close to a provisional performance with a time of 4:48.7 in the 1,500-meter run. That was 3.7 seconds off the NCAA standard and good for third place.


(Feb. 1) Andrea Midyett turned in two of the fastest times in school history in the 800-meter run at the East Tennessee State University Invitational.

Midyett ran a career-best time of two minutes and 20.53 seconds in the preliminaries, second fastest in school history. In the finals, she finished with a time of 2:22.02 to place sixth out of 64 runners in a predominantly Division I meet. That time is the third best in school history.

Angela Davie, the 2002 conference runnerup in the 1500-meter run, recorded a time of 5:14.93 in the mile run. That is the fastest time by anyone in the conference this season.

Laura Young broke her school record in the pole vault at 2.90 meters (9 feet, 6 1/4 inches). Young has been the runnerup three times in the event at the conference indoor and outdoor championships.


(Jan. 24) In its first scored meet of the season, Emory University defeated the University of the South (Tenn.) 87-18 in a dual meet.

Emily Watts won the 50-meter dash and the 200-meter dash, and her time of 7.60 in the 55-meter dash is the best time in the conference this season.

Esther Choi won the triple jump and placed second in two events. Her jump of 9.90 meters (32 feet, 5 3/4 inches) is the second-best jump in the conference this season.


(Dec. 8, 2002) Emory University opened its indoor track season at the Christopher Newport Invitational.

Rebecca Ely was third among NCAA Division III athletes in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.01 seconds. She ran a 10.12 in the same event against Division I and II athletes.

Emory returns to action next semester on Jan. 25 at the University of the South (Tenn.) Invitational.


(Aug. 21, 2002) Both Emory University outdoor track and field squads have been recognized as All-Academic Teams by the U.S. Track Coaches Association (USTCA). In addition, four Emory track-athletes were cited as All-Academic Individuals.

Emory is one of 11 schools in NCAA Division III to have both its men's and women's squads receive this honor. Of those 11 schools, Emory was the only one to be listed among the best national universities according to U.S. News and World Report.

The women's team had a cumulative grade point average of 3.34 (on a 4.0 scale) and the men's team had a 3.32 GPA.

To qualify, individuals must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.25, completed at least two semesters, and participated in the NCAA national outdoor track and field championships. Teams are eligible for the honor if they have at least a 3.10 cumulative GPA with at least 14 competitors on the squad.
