Athletes of the Week

(May 31) Emory University's Meghan Callier competed in two events at the NCAA Division III national championships. Callier finished 14th in the 400-meter dash and she ran a leg on the Emory relay that placed 12th in the 4x400 relay. Callier is the third Emory freshman in the last 10 years to compete at the NCAA nationals in an individual event. She finishes the season with the top six times in school history in the 400 dash. At the NCAA meet, Callier helped the 4x400 quartet to a time of three minutes and 55.03 seconds, second best in Emory history, behind their own record set earlier this season


(May 24) Emory University's Jane Ukandu placed herself on the Emory's all-time list in two sprint events last weekend. At the North Central Invitational, she was sixth out of 19 competitors in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.47 seconds. That would make her the second-fastest individual in school history in the 100 dash. Ukandu finished eighth out of 24 entrants in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.06 seconds. That time would make her the sixth-fastest individual in school history.


(May 17) Emory University's Meghan Callier was part of two NCAA provisional qualifying and two school-record performances. At the Georgia Tech Invitational, Callier provisionally qualified for the NCAA national championships in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.19 seconds. That is the 20th fastest time in the nation in Division III in the event this season. Callier also bettered her own school record in the 400, set last month, by more than five tenths of a second. Until this season, the school record in that event had stood for nearly 20 years. Callier also ran a leg on Emory's 4x100 relay that finished at 48.72 seconds, a national provisional qualifying time. That time is the 30th best in the nation this season and broke the Emory record, set by Callier and teammates earlier this season, by more than three tenths of a second.


(May 10) Emory's 4x400-meter relay team provisionally qualified for the nationals and set a school record at the Clemson Classic. The quartet of Janina Kreider, Christine Shin, Jane Ukandu, and Meghan Callier finished second in the event with a time of three minutes and 52.57 seconds. That is the eighth-fastest time in the nation in NCAA Division III this season. It also is more than five seconds faster than the provisional qualifying standard for the NCAA national championships. Their time was more than five seconds faster than the previous school record set back in 1994.


(April 26) Freshman Jane Ukandu earned all-conference honors in four events to help Emory finish second at the University Athletic Association championships. She is the fourth Emory athlete and the first Emory freshman to ever all-UAA honors in four or more events at the outdoor championships. Ukandu won the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.61 seconds. The time is the third-best mark in Emory history. It is also the best time ever in the 200-meter dash by an Emory runner at the UAA championships. Ukandu finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time 12.40 seconds, one-hundredth of a second behind teammate Emily Watts.. Ukandu's 100-meter time is the third best in school history behind Watts' time. Ukandu was also part of the 4X100-meter relay team that set a school record with a time of 49.03 seconds while finishing second. The mark was a provisional qualifying time for NCAA Division III national championships. Ukandu also was on the 4X400-meter relay team, which finished second with a time of 3:58.36. The time is the second-best mark in school history and 0.36 seconds away from provisionally qualifying for the NCAA national championships.


(April 19) Freshman Caroline Hagedorn finished second out of 23 mostly NCAA Division I runners in the 5000-meter run at the Vanderbilt Invitational. Her time of 18 minutes and 0.39 seconds is a career best by almost 24 seconds. The time makes her the fifth-best individual in school history and the second best among freshmen.


(April 12) The team of Janina Kreider, Christine Shin, Jane Ukandu and Meghan Callier finished within one second of a school record in the 4X400-meter relay at the UNC-Charlotte Invitational. Competing against NCAA Division I universities, the team finished fourth out of six teams with a time of three minutes and 58.80 seconds. The mark is the second best in Emory history, just shy of the school-record of 3:57.91. It is also less than a second shy of 3:58.00 mark needed to provisionally qualify for the NCAA outdoor championships.


(April 5) Freshman Katie Anding set a new school record in the pole vault at the Sewanee Relays. She finished first out of 8 competitors with a jump of 3.20 meters (10 feet, 6 inches). This is the second best vault in the South region this season, according to Southregionrunning.com. She also finished fourth out of 15 runners in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.58 seconds.


(March 29) Freshman Meghan Callier broke a 19-year-old Emory record in the 400-meter dash at the Emory Classic. Callier placed third out of 30 runners with a time of 57.75 seconds to help Emory finish third out of 25 teams. She surpassed the old record by 0.28 seconds and finished 0.15 seconds shy of a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Division III championships.


(March 22) Emory University sophomore Rebecca Ely won her heat and placed second overall in the 100-meter hurdles competing against Division I athletes at the Clemson Relays Her time of 16.28 seconds placed her second in a field of nine racers. She won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:15.37.


(March 8) Junior Dorothy Boone finished third in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs at the UAA indoor championships. She becomes the fourth Eagle ever to attain all-conference honors in both events in the same year.


(March 1) The quartet of Meghan Callier, Angela Davie, Amy DiBianca, and Julia Morton, won the distance medley relay at the Clemson Classic with a time of 12 minutes and 29.80 seconds. The mark set a school record in the indoor distance medley relay, beating the previous school record of 12 minutes and 35.14 seconds, which was set earlier this season. It is the fastest time in the South region this season by 45 seconds, according to Southregionrunning.com, and is just 10 seconds away from provisionally qualifying for the NCAA indoor championships.


(Feb. 23) Janina Kreider finished fourth in a field of 27 runners in the 400-meter dash last weekend at the Tennessee Indoor Classic. Her time of 61.17 seconds is the third-best time in the event in school history. Kreider was competing against runners from NCAA Division I universities. The time also is the sixth fastest in the South region this season according to southregionrunning.com.


(Feb. 16) Meghan Callier finished first out of 16 competitors in the 400-meter dash at the second Sewanee Invitational. Her time of 61.65 seconds is the fourth best in the South region, according to Southregionrunning.com. The time is also less than two tenths of a second away from being among the best three in school history in this event. Callier was also part of the 1600-meter relay team that finished first out of six teams with a time of 4 minutes and 11.27 seconds. This time is just two tenths of a second away from the third best in indoor school history.


(Feb. 9) The team of Amy DiBianca, Kirsten Pfeiffer, Julia Morton, and Angela Davie won the distance medley relay at the Christopher Newport Invitational. Their time of 12 minutes and 35.14 seconds set a new school record in the indoor distance medley relay. The team's time was more than 10 seconds faster than the previous school record. The time is the fastest in the South region, according to Southregionrunning.com, and is just 15 seconds away from provisionally qualifying for the NCAA indoor championships.


(Feb. 2) Freshman Christine Shin finished first in the long jump at the Sewanee Dual Meet. Her jump of 17 feet even (5.20m) is the second best in the South region this season. Her jump is the best indoor long jump for the Eagles since 1998 and the best by an Emory freshman in 10 years.


(Jan. 26) Emory Freshman Julia Morton won the 800 meter run at the East Tennessee State Invitational last week. She finished first out of 17 runners with a time of 2:24:13.
