Athletes of the Week

(May 7) Emory University's Lauren Shores finished fifth out of 16 runners in the 5,000-meter run, while competing against mostly Division I schools at the Duke Asics Twilight meet.  Shores' time of 17:40.26 was her second-best time of the season, and just 0.26 seconds away from an NCAA provisional qualifying time.  The junior's time was the fifth-fastest by an Emory competitor in the event this season, and the third-fastest time of her career.


(Apr. 23) Emory's Jordan Beall set a new University Athletic Association (UAA) record in the long jump while competing at the Association's Championship Meet.  Beall's distance of 5.70 meters in the long jump was an NCAA provisional qualifying time, along with a conference and school record, as she finished first in the event.  The sophomore also took sixth in the 100-meter dash, and was part of the third-place 4x100-meter relay team.  All together, Beall scored 19 points for the Eagles, helping Emory to a third-place finish at the meet.


(Apr. 9) Emory University's Amy DiBianca was the top Division III finisher in the seeded 5,000-meter run at the Duke Asics Invitational.  DiBianca finished 22nd overall in the race, which was composed mostly of competitors from Division I schools.  The senior recorded a time of 17:35.60 in the event, an NCAA provisional qualifying time and the best time this season for an Emory runner.


(Apr. 2) Emory University's Lauren Shores recorded two top-five finishes while competing at the Emory University Classic.  Shores finished first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the line in a time of 11:35.00.  The junior also took fourth-place in the 1,500-meter run, finishing the race in 4:46.17.  Shores' performances helped the Eagles finish in second place at the Emory Classic.


(Mar. 26) Emory University's Ashley DeMarco recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying height in the high jump while competing at the Emory University Invitational.  DeMarco's height of 1.65 meters was good for a first-place finish out of the 14 competitors in the high jump.  The senior recorded two other top-five finishes, taking third place in the 100-meter hurdles (15.84 seconds), and fourth-place in the javelin (33.90 meters).  DeMarco's performance helped the Eagles to a fourth-place finish out of 19 teams at the meet.


(Mar. 19) Emory University's Ashley DeMarco posted her first-ever first-place performance in the heptathlon as she topped the 10-competitor field at the 49er Classic in Charlotte, NC.

DeMarco claimed the top spot with an NCAA provisional qualifying total of 4,321 points. She recorded a total of four first-place finishes and finished second in another.

On the first day of action, Ashley captured the top spot in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.73 seconds, her third-best effort during her Emory career. She also finished first in the high jump (5' 2 1/2") and shot put (35'8"). She finished second in the 200 meters with an effort of 27.04 seconds.

On the second day of competition, she battled wet and cold conditions but still managed to win the 800 meters with a career-best time of 2:35.89.


(Mar. 5) Emory University's Ashley DeMarco took first-place in the 55-meter hurdles at the 2007 University Athletic Association Championships.  DeMarco's personal-best time of 8.81 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles was good for the top finish in the conference.  The senior also finished second in the high jump, recording a school-record and NCAA provisional qualifying height of 1.66 meters.  DeMarco helped the Eagles finish third at the UAA Indoor Championships, the team's 15th-consecutive top-four conference finish.


(Feb. 26) Emory University's Ashley DeMarco finished in the top-ten in three of the four events she competed in at the Sewanee Indoor Classic, including a first-place finish in the high jump.  DeMarco recorded a height of 1.61 meters in the high jump, her third-best height of the season.  The senior went on to finish second in the 55-meter hurdles, recording a season-best time of 8.86 seconds.  DeMarco finished her day with an eighth-place finish in the 200-meter dash (28.53 seconds), and a finish of 9.61 meters in the triple jump, her second season-best result of the day.  Her performance helped the Eagles, ranked 28th in the nation, to a third-place finish out of 12 teams at the meet.


(Feb. 19) Emory University's Amy DiBianca recording an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 5,000-meter run while competing at the DePauw Indoor Classic this past weekend.  DiBianca finished second in the 5,000-meter run, completing the race in 17:31.91.  The senior also turned in a time of 5:08.80 in the mile run at the Hoosier Hills Invitational, good for a ninth-place finish.  Both times were the fastest for Emory this season.  DiBianca's performance at DePauw helped the Eagles to finish sixth out of 13 teams.


(Feb. 12)  Emory University's Lauren Shores finished first in the 5,000-meter run, while competing at the Clemson Tiger Indoor Invitational in Clemson, SC.  Shores recorded a time of 17:55.91 in the 5,000-meter run, the third-best time of her career in the event.  Competing against mostly NCAA Division I opponents, the junior finished 18 seconds ahead of her next closest competitor.


(Feb. 5) Emory University's Tracy Whittaker recorded a first-place finish in the pole vault, while competing at the Sewanee Tiger Invitational last Saturday.  Whittaker recorded a height of 3.19 meters in the pole vault, good for first-place in the event.  Also, the junior finished fourth in the triple jump, recording a distance of 10.14 meters.  Whittaker scored a total of 12 points for Emory during the meet, helping the Eagles finish second overall.


(Jan. 29) Emory University's Julia Morton paced the Eagles at the Niswonger Track and Field Invitational, finishing sixth out of 32 runners in the one mile run.  Morton, competing in her first meet of the season, recorded a time of 5:22.71.  The senior's time in the event was a career best.  Morton and the Eagles will be back in action on February 3rd, as Emory will compete at the University of the South (Tenn.).


(Jan. 22) Sprinter Jane Ukandu recorded first-place finishes in two events to lead Emory University at the Baldwin-Wallace College Mid-Winter Classic last weekend.  Ukandu, the returning University Athletic Association Championship Most Valuable Runner, recorded a first-place time of 7.49 seconds in the 55 Meter Dash.  The senior followed that performance with a time of 27.25 seconds in the 200 Meter Dash, good for her second first-place finish of the meet.
